  1. Hi Joash! Welcome to the forum, I hope you will have a great time here. If you have any questions at all dont hesitate to ask here, me or one of the moderators. Good luck with your new blog! :)
  2. Sure, we could call it "market environmentalism" at the moment, but it's still the same thing, based on the same paradigm. The higher the profit is, the higher the growth rate will be, which in turn leads to a higher rate of depletion of various recourses which ultimately leads to a higher rate of pollution. At the end of capitalism there will be environmental destruction. But, you are correct. This is not really what this thread is about. I will save my comments for some other time. Sorry! Well, my comment about playing god was merely a way to easily explain my viewpoint. And of course a ban is not needed. But are we really that scared to move away from status quo that we could take the "easy" way, so to say, and try to engineer the climate to suit our needs. It's better to take the bull by it horns and stop our CO2 emitting sources, invest in a more sustainable society, renewable energy etc.
  3. Haha that was funny! If this was an normal change of climate that took place during thousands of years, my answer would be yes. But the warming is happening so fast that the animals have no time to adjust to the new climate.
  4. What I find interesting is that people seem to take for granted that capitalism, who got us into this mess, will get us out of it. Why is that so? You mean like through iron fertilization and such? I don't know really. Such methods, I believe, where we actually play "god" over the climate can create more (unexpected) problems than they actually solve.
  5. Its depressing to see that the climate crisis have come this far that we are actually discussing something crazy like this... :badtaste: No disrespect intended for you "sorrymom"!
  6. Due to climate change our seas and oceans are getting warmer. And now scientists have confirmed that a warmer temperature in the waters will create stronger storms, such as Katrina in 2005 and the more recent hurricane Ike. "If the seas continue to warm, we can expect to see stronger storms in the future," James Elsner of Florida State University said. Satellite data has shown that during the last 25 years "strong cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons have become more frequent in most of the tropics". But according to the scientists, who published their findings in the journal Nature, the strength of weaker storms have not been "noticeably altered". "The researchers believe weaker storms are not affected so much because the factors that prevent them developing to their full potential, notably wind shear - abrupt changes in wind speed and direction that prevent the cyclone fuelling itself with ocean heat - are not related to ocean temperatures." But the scientists also calculated that only a 1C rise in sea surface temperature will increase the amount of strong storms by about one third. More controversial, some scientists warn that a warmer sea temperature will not just create stronger storms but also increase their numbers. Read more at BBC News and Reuters.
  7. You ask a good question that requires a lenghty reply. Unfortunately I dont have the time needed at this moment.. So this quote from Rosa Luxemburg and her "Junius Pamphlet" will have to do for now: "We stand today ... before the awful proposition: either the triumph of imperialism and the destruction of all culture, and, as in ancient Rome, depopulation, desolation, degeneration, a vast cemetery; or, the victory of socialism."
  8. Great! Also, we now have 201 registered members. That means we can now plant two more trees. Yay! :cute:
  9. I dont know... We are always behind! They seem pretty decent. I bet they are as green as they say. But that doesn't mean there aren't other local products under different brands that are just like these. I browsed their products a bit quickly, it seems they don't offer any re-fill products? Hmm.. thats not good! :sceptical:
  10. Yes, the discussions here can get a bit heated sometimes. But that doesn't mean we dont like or respect each other. Oh, and don't forget to answer a lot of questions! ;)
  11. So what you mean is that just the notion of the companies being allowed to drill for more oil everywhere in the USA will lower the price? That might hold some truth. But not much. Sorry, but your 2-3 years still makes no sense. You say that the gas and energy prices will go down just because of "positive sayings" for more drilling in USA. That would mean that the prices would go down asap, and not 2-3 years after the actual "positive sayings" and decision. It takes up to ten years and billions of dollars to get a new field into productions. If any effect were to be felt on gas prices (most likely only a few pennies per gallon), that effect is decades away. Another reason that drilling for more oil in the U.S. won't result in lower gas prices is because oil prices are set on the global oil market. If the "Drill, Drill" slogan wins support it will be a fatal blow to everything from democracy, energy independence to huge environmental and climate risks for USA, as well as for the world. Drilling for more oil will just put the needed investments into renewable and alternative energy souces on hold. It will takes several years to transform our oil and fossil dependent civilizations. Thats why we need to end our oil addiction now. Not later.
  12. I dont mean that the "high" gas prices in USA will pay for it. I mean it's a good reason to invest in renewable and green energy. 2-3 years!? If something here is a fairytale that is!
  13. Hi Michael, Welcome to the forum! I hope you will have a great time here. :)
  14. You mean these products? I don't know. We dont have this brand over here in Sweden.
  15. Rajendra Pachauri, who currently chairs the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 2002 and who recently won the Nobel Peace Price along with Al Gore, said at a speech in London on Monday evening that "meat production puts more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than transport" and that "changing diets is something one should consider". "The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has estimated that direct emissions from meat production account for about 18% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions," he told BBC News. "So I want to highlight the fact that among options for mitigating climate change, changing diets is something one should consider." You can read more about this over at BBC News.
  16. According to a new report released by Amory Lovins and Imran Sheikh nuclear energy is still dangerous, not cost-effective, and too expensive and will even worsen climate change. "A widely heralded view holds that nuclear power is experiencing a dramatic worldwide revival and vibrant growth, because it’s competitive, necessary, reliable, secure, and vital for fuel security and climate protection. That's all false. In fact, nuclear power is continuing its decades-long collapse in the global marketplace because it’s grossly uncompetitive, unneeded, and obsolete—so hopelessly uneconomic that one needn't debate whether it's clean and safe; it weakens electric reliability and national security; and it worsens climate change compared with devoting the same money and time to more effective options." Nuclear energy is a waste of money because it creates a pollution problem that lasts for thousands of years, money that would be better and more productively spent on renewable energy, the report says. The report will also depress the free market supporters as it says that "nuclear power plants are unfinanceable in the private capital market because of their excessive costs and financial risks and the high uncertainty of both." "During the nuclear revival now allegedly underway, no new nuclear project on earth has been financed by private risk capital, chosen by an open decision process, nor bid into the world’s innumerable power markets and auctions. No old nuclear plant has been resold at a value consistent with a market case for building a new one." Via DeSmogBlog.

  18. We already have the alternatives and we already have the technology that is needed. Why waste more money and time on drilling for something that we won't have any use of until 10-20 years from now? It makes no sense! Let's use the current "high" gas and energy prices in USA and start invest in green reneable energy.
  19. All we need is political will! And like Al Gore said.. "That is something that is renewable in America"... :cute:
  20. Thank you! I rated you too. ;)
  21. It's easy actually! Click on any users name while you browse a thread and choose "View Member Profile". If you click on my name you will come to my profile here: http://www.enviro-space.com/index.php?showuser=2 To the left you can see an (old) photo of me. Below that you see five stars. 22. If you watch the full episode of the daily show: http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/...pisodeId=184108 And 7 mins into the show they compare John Mccain's speech with George Bush's speech.. That pretty much says it all on how much "change" John McBush will bring to Washington and USA.. :info:
  23. Old, rotten politicians always put their own interests first. That is why Obama is such a fresh air. Sure, Clinton is more experienced than Obama, but she misses that "fresh air" that Obama has. But the fact remains that during democratic ruling USA has been better off. What is it that says that THIS TIME the republicans will change and do good for USA for once? NOTHING. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern as the republican party. A virus. The republican politicians are a disease, a cancer of this planet, a plague... ;)
  24. True. But wouldn't it be more likely that ordinary IE users go to Firefox (or maybe even Opera) before this new google browser? Or has Google such powers and influence over ordinary IE users they will take the leap to google chrome asap? I doubt that, but it could be possible.
