I will be so busy this week with exams, work and a bunch of other things that I wont have time to post anything on the Green Blog. Luckily we might have one or a few guest authors posting this week.

I am just wondering how many here subscribe to one or several RSS feeds from different sites and blogs? Which feed-reader do you use?

A Picture is Worth... Playful Polar Bear

On Friday a friend of mine forwarded me an e-mail from Martin McGuiness, special assistant to the president for legislative affairs. At this point, we expect the White House to spin every issue to its advantage, but this quote in Mr. McGuiness's email stood out: "This administration has done more for the environment and addressing energy security and climate change than any other in history." While the claim that George Bush has done more to address climate change than any administration seems ridiculous, I am always willing to welcome converts to our movement. If this administration has finally come around on the climate crisis, then now is the time for them to take action. Let's join together and demand that the Bush Administration commit to an international treaty that would cut CO2 by 90%. http://www.algore.com/talkingpoints/[/url:91529] The truth is that far from having the best record on the climate crisis, this administration would rank at the very bottom. Remember, this was the White House that hired an energy lobbyist to censor the scientists authoring the government's climate reports. Immediately upon taking office, George Bush rejected the Kyoto Accord that called for only a 7% cut in CO2 below 1990 levels. He claimed, with no basis in fact, that the treaty would damage the U.S. economy. And in April, 2005, the Government Accountability Office determined that George Bush's climate program "lacks a major component required by law: periodic assessments of how rising temperatures may affect people and the environment." In addition, the White House worked to prevent any international progress on solutions to the climate crisis at both the G8 and APEC summits this summer. However, his advisor is now claiming, "This administration has done more for the environment and addressing energy security and climate change than any other in history." Tell President Bush that it's time to promote real solutions to the climate crisis and support an international treaty that will reduce CO2 by 90%. http://www.algore.com/talkingpoints/[/url:91529] Thank you, Al Gore

Google is probably one of the most successful Internet companies, ever. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, have transformed the well-known company from an ordinary search engine site to a successful global advertising company. The good thing is that they are turning more and more into a green company. For example they have plans for a massive solar installation at its campus. They are investing millions of dollar in companies seeking to make plug-in hybrid vehicles a reality. Google are also teaming up with green companies and doing many more things pushing Google to a more sustainable and environment friendly company. But Google also keep giving us mixed feelings about them. Their motto is “do no evil†but apparently you don’t always need to use it. Google is supporting dictatorships by censoring search results for people from different countries. Giving the American health care industry some rather disgusting tips. Just to name a few. The latest news about Google makes us shaking our heads. Larry Page and Sergey Brin have bought an enormous-CO2-polluting 767 to fly around in as their very own private yet. I don't know why two guys need a big wide-bodied 767 jet to fly around, guzzling gas and polluting the planet and I don't know why NASA cut them a deal to land at Moffit Airbase, minutes away from Google headquarters but I do know that it hurts the brand image of the company they founded and run. Not good. Is Google really serious about their “do no evil†motto or are they just looking for some good PR? Image credit: Peter Kaminski. Image licensed under a Creative-Commons Attribution license.

Yesterday I talked about how you can fight global warming by buying a laptop due to the fact that they generally use less energy than an ordinary desktop computer. But it doesn’t really matter if you use a laptop or a desktop computer if you don’t activate the computers power saving settings. And don’t think for a second that your computers screen saver saves energy. Unless the screen or backlight on a laptop or desktop screen actually turns off, a screen saver uses as much power as word processing. So the best way to save energy is to activate your computers power saving features. Activate your computers sleep mode so that your computer goes to “sleep†while you are (afk) away from keyboard. But don’t worry! Activating the sleep mode doesn’t mean that the computer shuts itself off while you’re not around. All the work and things you were doing before will still be there when you return. You can also choose to switch off your monitor or spin down the hard drives after a certain amount of time away from your computer. Your power settings also allow you to completely shutdown your computer if you haven’t used it for a while. But doing all this can be tricky if you aren’t an experienced computer user. So the easiest way is to use a program called LocalCooling. It’s a neat program where it’s only downsides are that it only works on Windows computers. LocalCooling let’s you easily decide what kind of power saving mode you want to use on your computer and it shows you how much energy your computer uses. The best part is that it shows how many trees, gallons of oil or electricity you have saved when having these power saving settings on. It’s really neat! If you want you are welcome to join Green-Blogs very own LocalCooling group. This is how you do: 1. Download Local Cooling for free from http://www.localcooling.com 2. Install and set everything up as you like it. 3. Create an free user account over at http://www.localcooling.com 4. Login to your account in the program you've just downloaded. If you don't you will not be able to track how much power you have saved. 5. Login to your account over at http://www.localcooling.com 6. Once logged in go to "My Account" and customize your account. Over at "Edit Your Account Details" look for a form called "Join a Group". In this form you need to type in: "green-blog.org" Now you have joined the Green Blog group!

Laptops are generally more environmental friendly than their “big brothersâ€. So if you are planning on getting a new computer you should consider a laptop instead of a stationary (desktop) computer. A stationary or desktop computer usually uses around 130 watts while a laptop only uses around 15 watts, and sometimes that is with the same tech specs. Other good things are that laptops are smaller and use less packaging, meaning less transport and storage space needed. When looking for a new computer you should look for an Energy Star-rated laptop and you might also want to check out the Green Electronics Guide from Greenpeace. Another good option besides a laptop is Zonbu, the first zero-emissions personal computer. Image credit: Simon Law. Image licensed under a Creative-Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.

Very well said "burntoshine". We need to evolve. But how long will it take until something actually happens? Do we have to wait until we face the major catastrophes due to global warming and all it's side effects? But will it be too late then? Im scared that if we don't "evolve" in a reasonable time we will "evolve" in a bad way later on. And with that I mean "evolving" into a fascist political system where it's the West against the poor undeveloped countries (similar as how it works today). But is is it possible for that to happen? Maybe the effects of global warming will destroy all chances for us to even build up a global fascist political system? Maybe we won't create one single country but a few major ones that fight for the remaining recources and liveable areas? In Battlefield 2142 the EU and PAC fight each other for the control of the liveable areas remaining on Earth. The old superpower USA has since long been destroyed due to several different reasons. This is a scenario that could actually happen.

George Monbiot speaks about air travel and Love Miles As part of Eco Week environmental campaigner George Monbiot came into the offices of Penguin UK to talk about the problems facing the environment and steps we can take to combat global warming. Here is a short passage from his talk. [youtube:f23bd] [/youtube:f23bd]

A really good link and interesting post. <!-- s:) --><!-- s:) --> I would say that we see our economical system in the wrong way. Today economic growth and welfare is when you waste as many recources as you possible can in the shortest amount of time. We are killing ourself with over-comsumption and Capitalism is to blame. Some good reading can be Ecological economics, Green economics and Eco-socialism. Yes, overpopulation is a major problem. And it's a problem not many dare to talk about. But we cannot stop overpopulation without strong governments or before various catastrophes kick in. Here is one thought: We will never solve our environment crisis and we will never see welfare for everyone with todays political system. In todays world/system there are too many needs to satisfy. The poorer countries want to have the same standard of living as we in the western world has. And the only simple, cheap and fast way for that today is to burn fossil fuels, pollute the environment and be greedy. The solution and only realistic way to solve all of our problems is that we all become one nation, one country. We all belong to the same race so why shouldn't we all belong to the same country? With todays technology it's possible to create an worldwide democratic country that satisfy everyones needs (in a socialist and democratic way). You have probably already seen this scenario in various science fiction movies such as Starship Troopers, Battlestar Galactica etc etc. Sure it sounds crazy (utopia) but if you think about it for a while it makes sense. Isn't it time to set all of our problems aside and create a meaningsful future for everyone on the only planet that can support life in the whole known universe? If we don't, life as we know it will be completely whipped out by year 2100.

Would you be interested in moving to a "green" web host?
Simon posted a article in Green Web Hosting
Would you be interested in moving to a "green" web host? Well that has been our question for a couple of weeks now. And if you look at the final results a majority of our readers would actually be interested in moving to an environmental friendly web host. According to you it doesn’t matter if a green web host cost a little extra. Only 9% would like to move to a green web host but can’t because “they cost too muchâ€. Around 30% of you haven’t yet fully understood what a “green†web host actually is. That’s okay, we understand that. That’s why we will soon dedicate a whole section of our site were we will try to explain what separates green web hosts from normal (dirty) web hosts. Only about 4% of our visitors (or at least the ones who have voted) don’t want to move to a green web host. Are you stubborn or don’t you know what’s at stake? Please tell us why you don’t want to move to a green web host. Yes! (57%) What's a "green" web host? (30%) Yes, but they cost too much. (9%) No! (4%) Our new poll question is: Are you currently hosted on a “green†web host? -
