  1. The IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group) recently held their OnLine Green Awards — the OLGAs, which were voted on by more than 9,000 shoppers and a panels of judges. You can see the finalists by downloading the PDF, but of more intrigue for us was not so much who won the gong, but the assertions made by the IMRG about the Green Effects of Internet Shopping. They sprout some impressive figures. Such as: “Efficient package delivery by van can replace inefficient personal driving to the shops; in the case of grocery shopping, this could reduce vehicle miles by a 70% or more.” Or less inventory because there is a “tendency towards 'pre-selling' online - i.e. taking orders for products before they are built, [...] Research on the US book trade showed that a third of best sellers are unsold due to overproduction.’ And Dematerialisation, whereby many “retail products, such as music, entertainment, software, film, newspapers, dictionaries - and even money itself [...] are becoming digital and therefore downloadable. When this happens, the green effect of internet shopping on manufacture, packaging and physical product movement can be 100%!” See our related story on Green Music. IMRG realise that a true green comparison of CO2 emissions between internet shopping and other retail distribution models is required to back up these sorts of notions, and as such is a partner in the Green Logistics research consortium — six leading universities conducting retail distribution research over four years. See some of the findings so far appear after the fold. • An OECD study indicated that use of internet retailing could eliminate the need for 12.5% of retail-building space, saving the energy and materials needed to build, operate and maintain buildings. • Research indicates that internet shopping may use 40% to 90% less fuel than when customers drive their cars to the shops. • An Ernst and Young study estimated that internet applications could reduce inventories by 25% to 35%, while IBM suggested that the savings could be as high as 50%. • Researchers have reported customer mileage savings of 75%-95% where food-shopping trips are replaced by deliveries to their home. 2. Hello Michelle and welcome to the forum!
  3. Hahah yeah! But it also means your girlfriend is your sister..
  4. Hehehe.. Well I don't think that Shah Hussain is an relative to Saddam. But when you think about it. We have all evolved from the same ancestors back in Africa. So basically we are all relatives to each other.
  5. Yeah I mean warcraft 3. It's a mod so you still play CS but it uses the different races and all that. Pretty funny.
  6. yeah I agree with you. Thats why I mostly play WC3 or Zombie mods when I play CS.
  7. A new, solar-powered web host for consumers and small businesses was successfully launched yesterday. Greenest Host powers its data centres entirely using solar panels. Greenest Host also uses propane- and conventional grid-based backup systems if there for some reasons would be a dark day. The hosting plans starts at $14.95 per month for 1GB of space and 5GB of monthly data transfer. Greenest Host will be added to our Green Web Host list later today and reviewed by someone in the Green Blog team in a very near future. Stay tuned! Video: Introduction to Greenest Host
  8. BreathingEarth.net is a really neat flash site I found yesterday while I was browsing around. It’s an online flash presentation that “displays the carbon dioxide emission levels of every country in the world, as well as their birth and death rates”. And they do this in real-time! The presentation really puts things into a perspective. What will it take for us to wake up? Breathing Earth is definitely one of the more fascinating websites I’ve come across in a really long time.
  9. Hurricanes are fueled by warm ocean water and warm moist air, so it's predicted that global warming will mean more, and stronger tropical storms. It's tricky testing this against observations though because there's no data about storms out at sea until relatively recently. Plane observations started in 1944 and satellites in 1970. But the scientists behind a new study are confident they've shown a connection. From Scientific American[/url:a07a3]: via http://weblog.greenpeace.org/makingwave ... or_mo.html
  10. Using a water cooling system for your personal computer has been around for a while. But it isn’t until recently that you can cool down your servers using water. Panduit Corp recently released a new Net-Access Server Cabinet System that features IBM's Rear Door Heat Exchanger Water-Cooling Technology. It is basically a five-inch deep cooling door that uses chilled water to dissipate heat generated from the servers. This can easily reduce server heat output by up to 55%. Gartner recently released a report that says that water can carry, unbelievable, 3500 times more hear than air at sea level. This can considerably improve the temperature of data centres with more cooling efficiency.
  11. In the personal computing world HP (Hewlett-Packard) have had one of the best recycling programs. Now, six months ahead of schedule HP has recycled its one billionth pound. HP CEO Mark Hurd says that HP have “reached the tipping point where the price and performance of IT are no longer compromised by being green, but are now enhanced by it." All this means that companies that have invested in recycling are now making a profit by recycling products at the end of the products life. It’s great that HP can lead the way in recycling and say to its competitors that they actually make money from it while it attracts new customers. But we are sad to see that HP still rank far down in the Green Electronics Guide from Greenpeace. HP - A free-faller, dropping down for failing to provide clear timelines for eliminating the worst chemicals. It looses points for weak definition of take back policies. In the Green Electronics Guide HP is only placed on 11th place (of 14 places). According to Greenpeace HP “fails to provide timelines for the complete elimination of toxic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and all brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and therefore loses points”.
  12. I actually downloaded the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor today. It's a program that checks what kind of Vista OS your computer can run. It turned out that I can run Vista Home Premium but my sound, network and graphic card wasn't supported for Vista...
  13. Just like only_green_no_gray said, create an user account over at YouTube. After that you can watch that movie. YouTube have done this because the video is really awful and bloody.
  14. Yes I agree with you. But we can make it. We just need to put enough pressure on our politicians.
  15. This is just crazy! UFOs may soon no longer be just the realm of science fiction writers: researchers at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have started working on an "ultra eco-friendly plane" of the future which, in the vision of project director Etnel Straatsma, happens to be a flying saucer. As the head of recently-started CleanEra project, he hopes to design a plane that will reduce noise and release 50% less carbon dioxide per passenger-mile than current airliners. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/07 ... saucer.php

  17. Welcome to the forum Shah Hussain. I hope you will have a great time here!
  18. I just read something really awful: According to all scientific reports about global warming, our energy usage and the environment we have 8 years on us to cut down on our massive energy and fossil usage. Otherwise the global temperature will rise above 2 degrees and there will be no turning back from the planet reaching a global 6 degree increase at the end of 2100. If we reach 6 degrees there will be no life on planet earth… If we don't stop the global temperatures to rise above 2 degrees and reach for example 3 degrees the Amazonas will burn down, western USA will be turned into a desert, Southern Europe will be un-liveable, Greenland will melt causing the sea levels to rise extremely and flood New York and other coastal cities etc etc... A really good book about this subject: [url:89373]http://www.marklynas.org/sixdegrees[/url:89373]
  19. About 24: Jack Bauer to Strangle Climate Change 24, the Emmy Award-winning series from Imagine and Twentieth Century Fox Television, will strive to become the first television production ever to save enough energy and reduce enough carbon emissions over the course of a season to render its entire season finale "carbon neutral." http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/07 ... r_to_s.php
  20. Also note that when the planet gets warmer less water will come to the dams. That means that countries who rely on dams to genereate energy will loose energy in the future (50 years).
  21. The Kanguru Eco DriveI have posted about the new tower server Primergy TX120 from Fujitsu Siemens Computers that is said to be the world’s most energy efficient server. Not everyone can afford to buy a server, so here is something for us more ordinary bloggers. Western Digital, one of the most well known hard drive companies, has teamed up with Kanguru in marketing a green hard drive for consumers and businesses. These GreenPower Hard Drives are all internal drives which are available in capacities from 320GB and up to 1TB (1000 GB). Western Digital claims that these new GreenPower Hard Drives is saving up to 40% in power consumption. Western Digital says they accomplish this through several technologies such as balancing spin speed, transfer rate and cache size; automatically unloading the heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag and calculating optimum seek speeds. These new GreenPower Hard Drives goal is to be “Energy Star 4.0” compliant. That means a minimizing their carbon footprint while realizing savings in electricity costs. According to Western Digital data-centres that use “10,000 drives can save $100,000 in annual energy costs, and reduce CO2 emission by 600 metric tons”. Also, don’t forget to check out Kangurus eco-friendly hard drives. These eco-friendly hard drives have three power modes that allow you to save up to 75% on the energy usage. The drives are fully RoHS compliant (no hazardous substances). http://www.wdc.com/en/company/greenpower.asp http://www.kanguru.com/35ecohd.html
  22. Well that is not entirely true. When the planet gets warmer the forests will become dry becuase their will be less water and rains. Therefor it will be easier for fires to take place. And a dry forest must be a heaven for an arsonist...
  23. Lineage 2, never heard of it? I mostly play Half Life 2. I can't wait until episode 2 comes out! Thats right!
  24. Yes this is a real dangerous problem. As the earth get's warmer more and more forests will burn and releases enormous amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. But the biggest threat is the rainforests. If we reach an 3 degrees increase in the earths global temperature the rainforests will all burn down and then we can no longer stop the effects of global warming - we are doomed. We need to act now! Tell your local politicians to support renewable energy and other green initiatives. Togheter we are strong!
  25. I totally agree with you.
