It is being called the world's cheapest new car. Priced at just $2,500 - the makers of India's Tata Nano says it aims to meet the needs of the country's growing middle class.

But critics say the Nano will lead only to more congestion on India's clogged roads, and increase air and noise pollution.

Amazing another source of pollution to a country already in the top list of polluters

Even at 50 MPG, assume that figure is for the "bare bones version", and you still have to wonder what the increase will be between this and the "motor scooters" that it is designed to replace. We do have to keep in mind the target market is not "new" drivers, but the ones moving up from the motorbike crowd. The new buyers will be those that by one of these instead of a bike.

What would be interesting is to compare one of these to the "bikes" that they are designed to replace. icon_smile.gif

That is true and indeed an interesting idea. But then again, motorbikes takes less space than a car, even if this car is a bit smaller than the "ordinary" ones.

But I still believe this car is totally wrong. This car will just continue the private motorism madness around the world.

By the way. Here is an interesting article about the car: The Tata Nano: The Second Coming or Satan's Car?[/url:1i9ugtbu]

However, the private motorism madness is one of the things that fuels a big part of the economy and sadly the various governments are failing badly at providing valid alternate forms of transportation. Even when an alternate is proposed they try to stick to "heavy rail" which may create more smog than an equal number of motor bikes....
