Did you know? New parents are inundated with decisions about how to feed, clothe and care for their newborn. One big decision is whether to use cloth or disposable diapers. Originally, cloth diapers were simply rectangular cloths that were secured to a baby with safety pins. Today, cloth diapers are contoured to fit a baby's body, and there are various kinds of fasteners. Disposable diapers, meanwhile, offer convenience.

Benefit of Cloth: Cost

Cloth diapers are much less costly than disposable diapers. Mothering.com reports the average family saves $2,000 per child by using cloth diapers, instead of disposable ones, over the course of the baby's time in diapers. Disposable diapers cost, on average, 25 cents each, and the average child wears 8,000 before he is fully potty-trained. Cloth diapers can be re-used for younger siblings. Many parents sell used cloth diapers at yard sales, in consignment stores or through online auctions. Higher-quality cloth diapers often resell for as much as half of the original purchase price.

Benefit of Cloth: Environment

Cloth diapers are much more eco-friendly than disposable diapers. On average, 10,000 tons of diapers are deposited into landfills every day. Cloth diapers produce no waste that goes into landfills. In addition, you will help reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding the harm of manufacturing disposable diapers. It is estimated that disposable diaper manufacturers use 1 million metric tons of wood pulp and 75,000 metric tons of plastic each year. :P

Benefit of Cloth: Comfort

In general, cloth diapers do not irritate a baby's skin as badly as disposable diapers do. Cloth-diapered babies are not exposed to sodium polyacralate, which is what makes liquid turn gelatinous. When a baby urinates, there are shiny crystals of sodium polyacralate that may stick to his skin and cause reactions. Some babies are allergic to the chemical, while others only experience mild reactions, such as diaper rash. Cloth diapers are also available in a variety of fabrics. :D
