The United Nations special rapporteur on environmental defenders, Michel Forst, has expressed his concern that climate activists in Sweden are being treated as “criminals” by the government and authorities.
In 2024, this “Rebel Mom” was forced from her job at the Swedish Energy Agency where she had been working on a security-classified position as a gas coordinator since 2023. Her employer had suddenly considered her to be a security threat because of her climate activism.
Almost 200 land defenders and climate activists were murdered in 2024. And environmental activists are increasingly facing tougher suppression and harassment from governments in Western countries.
