Wind power is an excellent alternative to fossil fuel or nuclear power. There are virtually no environmental side effects associated with wind turbines. As long as there is wind to turn the massive blades, electricity is being harvested. There are 4 distinct phases involved in the erection of a wind turbine.

    How Wind Turbines are Manufactured

The construction of wind turbines seems like a huge hassle, but it is really not as bad as it looks. Even though it looks like one big piece of equipment when they are out in a field, they are actually composed of multiple pieces including the base, midsection, hub and blades. Each section is made in a factory where workers specialize in the tasks associated with that specific part, making the whole process much more efficient.

    Transporting Equipment to the Site

According to Pack-All International, shipping large and awkward objects is a pretty difficult process. Wind turbines are one of the most difficult shipping feats that happen!

Even though the turbine is shipped in multiple pieces, each section still qualifies as an over-sized load. Because of this, each route taken by the delivery trucks need to be meticulously planned. Power lines, signs, tight turns, and hills can pose a threat to not only the turbines, but also the safety of other people on the road. Signs may need to be removed in order to get the pieces through, so the local Department of Transportation should be notified for any risks.

Once the route has been chosen and the threats have been identified, the massive parts are loaded onto delivery trucks. Each truck needs to be large enough to hold the over-sized sections, often weighing over 10 tons. The order of shipping is generally the base and midsection first, followed by the turbine hub, and finishing with the blades, this way the turbine can be assembled in order.

    On-Site Turbine Building

Assembly can also seem like a daunting task, but since each turbine is identical to the others, a very successful process has been created to make assembly more efficient. When the pieces arrive, there is usually a fleet of construction equipment to aid the assembly process. Three giant cranes are necessary for lifting the heavy sections into place.

Beginning with the base and midsection, the pole are lifted with the crane and placed onto a pre-formed concrete base, designed to specifically hold the poles. Construction workers sit in the hub as cranes set columns in place to bolt down the pieces. There is a pre-fabricated ladder within the mid-section, allowing the workers to climb as another part gets lifted.

This process is continued for the entire assembly of turbine, eventually creating a very efficient source for harvesting wind energy.

in the home not only hurt the environment, they also hurt your pocketbook. After speaking with plumbers at A1 Sewer & Drain, I found that there are plenty of smart strategies to save water at home. Save on your monthly bill and help the environment by avoiding these water losses.

    1. Watering the Lawn During the Day

Watering the lawn during daylight hours means a significant loss to evaporation. Switch over to a night time watering schedule to save significant amounts of water. Getting lower to the ground irrigation systems can also significantly reduce losses due to wind.

    2. High Flow Appliances

Replacing your outdated appliances with modern, lower water use ones will significantly decrease your water usage throughout the month. Old appliances not only use more water, they also often develop leaks and weaknesses that can increase you water usage significantly.

    3. Overuse of the Washing Machine and Dishwasher

When you wash your clothes, be sure to use the correct setting for the amount of clothes you are washing. If your machine doesn't have options for load size, only do the laundry when you have enough clothes to fill the machine. This more efficient use will result in significant water savings. In the same vein, only run the dishwasher when it is full.

    4. Long Showers

It's an old tip and everyone knows it, but did you know just how important it is? Keeping your showers under five minutes a day can save up to 1,000 gallons of water a month. That is a huge savings for a small change.

    5. Faucet Leaks

Those dripping faucets aren't just annoying, their losing water like crazy. Leaks are usually relatively easy and inexpensive to fix, and will save gallons of water. If your toilet develops a leak in the seal, you will hear it running more often, this is another important fix, since it will most likely lose even more water than the faucet.

    6. Wasted Grey Water

Water doesn't immediately become useless once it has run through the drain. Lightly used "grey water" can be rerouted by a plumber to water your lawn, flowers, or trees. Reusing this water is one of the best ways to increase efficiency in your home.

    7. Install a Rain Sensor

If your lawn watering is on a timer, adding a rain sensor could make a significant difference. This little device will keep your lawn watering system from running when it isn't needed. This will prevent over-watering your lawn, which can damage plants, and will save both energy and water.

The more steps you take to limit water inefficiencies the more you will save. The environment will thank you for it.

The best careers are those that are packed with purpose and meaning. For those who have a vision of changing the way we treat our environment, there are a few careers that might just be a match for you.

    Green Energy

The global demand for green energy is on the rise. That’s a trend that isn’t going to stop. Not only is this a popular technology field in the US, nations like China (who loses trillions each year to environmental issues) desperately need replacements for fossil fuels. The demand is high, and the global environment needs people smart enough to solve the issues that the world faces.

These careers have many challenges and difficulties, but if you are dedicated, you have the potential to truly make a difference for future generations. If that is what you want most from your job, you now have some ideas of how to get that done.

Some skills on demand in this field are:
    Patent lawyers
    Software developers
    Technical engineers

    Education

At first glance, education may not seem to measure up to finding a cure for cancer or saving the planet. The truth is, though, good educators can make a tremendous difference in dozens of lives every year.

As a professional educator, you not only have the opportunity to give students a practical and frank view on the state of the environment, but you also have the power to change individual lives. Many child geniuses are waiting just for a small spark to send them rocketing into brilliant success. Other’s desperately need the support of a good teacher to be able to graduate high school. If you are looking for a career change, the University of Cincinnati can offer you a masters in curriculum and instruction online.

    Ecology

More and more people are starting to pay attention to our ecosystem, so ecology-related jobs are not only world-changing, but they are growing in demand. Federal, state, and even international governments will pay a pretty penny for well-informed ecologist.

Ecologists study the relationships between people, animals, and the natural world. Their research lets everyone else know what we can do to help save our planet and why that's important. Many important government decisions are made with the expert opinion of these scientists.

    Molecular Biology

Like medical technology, this can also have huge potential impact on physical health, except in this field it's all about studying the human body. Molecular biologists work to understand our anatomy and how it can be altered for better health.

Greater understanding of our biology can yield new treatments and cures for devastating diseases. This is an exciting field that changes all the time as our technology becomes more powerful.

    Medical Technology

Finding cures for deadly diseases is often the first thing that comes to mind along with the idea of changing the world. This is a challenging career path, and it requires a lot of schooling, but successes for you could mean revolutionary new medications. You could relieve chronic pain, improve physical health, and extend lifespans.

If you're interested in medicine but more intrigued by chemistry than biology, this could be a good career for you.

While much of the decisions to decrease human toll on the environment lay in the hands of big corporations and government, there are still choices that the average person can make at home to make an impact. One big impact homes have on the environment is the chemicals that run into local water and soil. If you know which chemicals you are using commonly, you can take some of the load off of your local environment.

    Parabens

These types of chemicals are common preservatives in the cosmetic industry. Shampoo, moisturizers, and makeup all use this ingredient. On label look for ingredients that end in “-paraben”. This can interfere with the function of your hormones, reproductive systems, influence breast cancer and can hinder baby development. Synthetic parabens have an especially negative affect on marine life as these chemicals tend to get into water sources that pass through urban areas.

    DEA (Diethanolamine)

This chemical is found in foaming and creamy products. These products include shampoo and moisturizers. It can form cancer-causing nitrosamines. Wild life and fish can also be harmed by this chemical. Mild to moderate skin and eye irritation can also be caused by this compound. The degradation of some of the chemicals used as preservatives in cosmetics can release nitrites. This happens when the product is exposed to air.

    DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate)

Nail products and hair sprays contain this chemical. It is toxic to reproduction and may interfere with the function of hormones. This chemical is also harmful to wildlife and fish.

The compound can be absorbed through the skin. Genetic mutations can be caused because it can enhance the capacity of the chemicals. However, it has not been shown to be a mutagen. It can also damage the liver and cause kidney failure in young children. This can happen if the products that contain phthalates are chewed or sucked for long periods of time.

    Ammonia

According to the EPA this is the most environmentally hazardous substance used commonly in homes. Pure ammonia and ammonia based cleaners escape into streams or other water sources. Ammonia in large quantities seriously affects agriculture because it throws off the pH balance needed for irrigation.

    Pesticides

Most chemicals are designed to kill living organisms and will be harmful to anything that it comes into contact with. If pesticides get into the ground, the water, or any other environment, you are doing a lot of damage. However, according to the Pest Detective there are non-toxic, organic, and mechanical strategies to eliminate unwanted pests.

    1. Natural Cleaning Solutions
Store-bought cleaning supplies such as furniture polish, air freshener, etc., are often very harmful. Many contain chemicals which pollute the environment and are bad for your health. Fortunately, everyday household products can be turned into effective, environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions.
Instead of purchasing furniture polish try this: a cheaper, cleaner version can be made at home with just a few drops of lemon oil and 1/2 cup of warm water.
A natural all-purpose cleaner can be made by combining 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 2 liters of water.

These are just a couple of A longer list of homemade cleaning products can be found at EarthEasy.com.

    2. Compost
Instead of throwing out eggshells, coffee grounds, banana peels, and leftover vegetables, why not compost instead? Composted material breaks down to create nutrient-rich soil and serves as a natural fertilizer for plants? You can use this fertilizer to feed a thriving garden for your family. This reduces the need to use chemicals in the garden and prevents material from being sent to the landfill, where it would instead have produced methane. Make sure you are aware of what can and cannot be composted.

    3. Use Recycled Building Materials
Water bottles aren't the only thing you can recycle. When a house is demolished, it creates an enormous amount of waste - unless, of course, the materials are recycled. If you are planning any major home renovations, consider using recycled building materials. Concrete, steel, wood flooring, shingles; recycling offers just as many good-quality options as does buying new materials.

    4. Don't Replace: Repair!
When you work on home renovations, instead of completely replacing a cabinet, radiator, or anything else you might be updating, try fixing anything salvageable. Everything you throw out creates waste more waste. Painting an old door or repairing a leaky faucet can make them good as new without creating unnecessary waste.

    5. Wash Laundry in Cold Water
90% of the energy used for laundry goes toward heating the water, when cold water will do the trick just fine. A year of washing clothes in hot water can put out over 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide. Switching to cold water can reduce this to 162 pounds.

    6. Insulation
While recycled building materials go a long way for your home renovation, new energy efficient technologies can be a much better investment financially and economically than outdated materials. Keeping your walls and ceiling well-insulated means keeping in heat and energy. Over the average lifetime of a building, every square foot of wall insulation saves roughly one ton of carbon dioxide. According to Retro Teck Window, you can retain 25-50% more of your homes energy with the properly insulated windows.

Make green choices in the management of your home. You will be supporting a healthier local and global environment.

It seems that for the past decade or two, clean energy has been the most important sector for innovation on the earth. We’ve been relying on fossil fuels for centuries, but now the planet is striving to reverse our dependence on this resource. Some of the reasons for this movement include:
The rapid depletion of crude oil in the world’s oil caches
Environmental awareness and education becomes more and more accessible to students, or anyone who knows how to navigate a search engine well
According to an industrial equipment testing company in Canada, 20/20 NDT, the environmental, financial, and political damage done from crude oil accidents is growing too great for governments and the public to ignore
Alternative sources of energy could cost much less in monetary resources, natural resources, and in political diplomacy

Finding alternatives sources to fuel our everyday lifestyles is becoming increasingly more important. Luckily, there are many viable options slowly dethroning oil as the sole fuel source and proving that reducing fossil fuel emission is better for our world.

    Algae Fuel
Similar to fossil fuels, CO2 is released when algae is burned, but this CO2 is not harmful to our planet. By using algae, current levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would remain steady, preventing any further increase in greenhouse gasses. Studies show it could provide over 2,000 gallons of fuel per acre every year.

    Bio-diesel
Fuel based in vegetable oil or animal fat, biodiesel can completely replace automobiles that run on diesel. It has better lubricating properties and can be harvested from a number of sources including fungi, coffee grounds, and alligator fat (which wastes away in landfills every year in the millions of pounds).

    Bio-alcohol
Alcohol fuels come in four varieties that are harvested from fermentation or sometimes from the simple combination of carbon dioxide and water. They are simple to produce and can be done so on a massive scale by employing the use of any type of biomass (animal waste included).

    Ammonia
Created from nitrogen and hydrogen, this can be harvested through the work of a small machine and can be used where it is made. Because of this, it is extremely low cost, would reduce the amount of production plants needed, and produces no emissions. It even gives rise to the possibility of a self-fueling car.

    Hydrogen
Another zero emission fuel, hydrogen uses internal combustion to power anything from cars to spacecraft. It is known to be as safe as gas in regards to possibility of exploding.

    Compressed Air
As the name implies, compressed air is air compressed enough so that when it is released, it releases with enough power to fuel a car. Because it does not need an explosion, the car is piston free, and the price is at least 1/10 as expensive as fossil fuel.

    Biogas
Either compressed or liquefied, biogas is one of the cleanest combustible alternatives available. It is methane-based and, thus, renewable. Currently, it can be harvested from landfills, animal waste, and sewage. Measurements of air quality around cities that have started switching to biogas show cleaner air quality.

After the peak oil consumption of the 1980s, the world’s oil consumption is on the decline. New technologies will soon replace oil as we know it. For more information, check out Richard Sears’ TED talk called “Planning for the End of Oil”.

Whether you are launching a new business or you are eager to take your existing business on a better path going forward, green initiatives are understandably focal points. Running a greener business can have a positive impact on public relations, and it could help you to conserve financial capital. What can you do to run a greener business?
    Install Solar Panels
Solar panel installation is an investment that can yield tremendous rewards. Once the solar panels are installed, they may generate enough energy to meet most or all of your business’s needs. With the financial savings associated with a reduced or eliminated electricity bill, more funds can be allocated for marketing, growth opportunities and more.
    Replace Your Boiler System
A green boiler system is specifically designed to reduce energy costs while still producing the needed output. If you decide to invest in solar panels for your commercial building, your building may require a smaller and more affordable solar panel system after a boiler system installation has been completed. In the event that you do not own your commercial building, your landlord may be agreeable to making this green upgrade upon request.
    Choose Eco-Friendly Materials
Each time your business makes a purchase, you have the option to buy green materials. These may be sustainable materials, such as bamboo, or recycled materials. Everything from your product packaging to your office supplies, furnishings and even vehicles are available in green alternatives. In many cases, eco-friendly materials could be more affordable, more durable or even easier to maintain than alternatives.
    Work With Green Vendors
Does your business use contractors and vendors for office cleaning, deliveries, document shredding, employee uniforms and more? Many other companies have already adopted green practices. For example, a green cleaning service may use organic cleaning products and hybrid vehicles. By choosing to work with green vendors, you are supporting a healthier environment. Many green initiatives that these vendors use create cost savings for them. For example, businesses that use hybrid vehicles may have lower fuel expenses. A portion of this savings may be passed on to customers like your business.
In some cases, a financial investment for green initiatives may be required. However, in the long run, the initial investment may be recouped in the form of operational savings. Consider how you can incorporate these ideas into your business soon so that you can begin enjoying the exceptional and far-reaching benefits that they provide.

Having clean water is something that many people in the US take for granted. Wastewater treatment plants make sure that the water that comes out of your tap is clean and safe for you to drink. Here are some of the ways that wastewater treatment plants can make their processes greener.

    Use Natural Slope Assistance

The lay of the land should be taken into consideration when it comes to treating sewage. Many plants will pump the sewage up and into the treatment facility. This can use a tremendous amount of energy just getting the water inside. The best way to reduce this waste is to position the treatment facility in such a way as to allow the natural slope of the land to direct the flow. A little bit of pumping assistance may be required, but it will use less energy overall.

    Smaller Systems Create Less Waste

Many communities will have one large wastewater treatment facility. Some companies, like Econocycle, know that this then requires that all of the waste from the city is transported to one place. Having smaller treatment areas reduces the amount of waste that is traveling long distances. This uses less energy and causes less destruction to the local environment. These smaller systems can also use less chemicals to treat the water due to the smaller volume that needs to be processed.

    Soil Filtration Methods

There are safer methods in which to treat sewage and waste. Soil filtration is one of the more environmentally safe wastewater treatment methods. The soil itself acts as a buffer to remove much of the contaminants that exist in the waste. This method has long been used when it comes to your home septic tank system. Community treatment facilities rely more on other methods of reducing the amount of contaminants that reenter the water supply.

    Renewable Energy Sources

Even in the greenest wastewater treatment facility, some energy is required. Employing greener methods with renewable energy sources can ensure that the facility is as green as possible. Solar panels are easy to install on any building that gets a significant amount of sun. Wind turbines may also be another method to consider for treatment facilities that are outside of the city limits. All of these factors combined help to reduce the carbon footprint of the sewage and wastewater treatment process.

Treating raw sewage before it can contaminant streams and rivers is important. It’s also important to be mindful of doing so in the most efficient and eco-friendly manner possible.

Cutting your utility costs shouldn’t have to be hard work. If you’re at a loss of where to start, have an energy audit conducted. This will give you a jumping off point for how to become more energy efficient. Here are some methods that you can use to reduce your utility costs.

    Reduce Your Loss Factor

Drafts are causing there to be a lot of air exchange in your home. Your HVAC unit has to work harder to maintain the temperature. Cut down on the amount of drafts in your home. Some of the ways that you can do this is to invest in caulking and weather-stripping. A more proactive approach is to replace old doors and windows. You can also add insulation into the areas of your home that you are lacking, such as the attic or your crawlspace.

    Service Your HVAC

A HVAC that is functioning at peak capacity will save you money in the long run. This means that you should have your HVAC unit serviced at least once a year. You’ll also need to check and/or change your air filter on a monthly basis. If your HVAC is on the older side, it might be time for an upgrade. Get quotes from several companies, like A & E Heating and AC Inc., so that you can find the best solution for your budget.

    Invest in Efficient Lighting Solutions

You may be spending more than is necessary lighting up your home. Look into changing out your old light bulbs with more energy efficient LED ones. They use approximately a quarter of the amount of energy as the fluorescent variety. Even fluorescents are better than the incandescent bulbs. Another solution is to install motion sensing light switches if your family can’t remember to turn off the lights in a room. The lights will automatically turn off when no one is there.

    Look Into Waste Reduction

Energy efficient appliances have come a long way. The Energy Star program has even come out with ratings for appliances like the washing machine and the dish washer. These appliances not only use less water, but less energy overall. Changing out older appliances will save you money over the life of the appliance. Another place that you can reduce waste is to install a programmable thermostat. There are even varieties that have a self-learning feature.

The first place to start when you want to become more energy efficient is to assess the areas of greatest use. Work your way backwards so that you can save money on your utility costs.

  11. HannahWhittenly
If you are concerned with your carbon footprint, there are things that you and your family can do to reduce it. The good news is that many of these ideas will not significantly alter your lifestyle. Therefore, you can do good for the Earth without having to go without the things that you want or need.
    Recycle Whenever Possible
That plastic soda bottle or milk carton is likely eligible to be recycled. The same goes for the cardboard box that your cereal came in or the soup can that you just made dinner from. In lieu of putting those objects in your recycling bin, you can use them as flower pots or fill them with soapy water to use as a fly or pest trap.
Find Ways to Limit Your Water Use
There are many ways to limit your water usage such as washing your dishes only once a day or by taking shorter showers. You can also save water by watering your lawn once or twice a week instead of once or twice a day. Tightening loose pipes or making sure that the hose is completely turned off may also conserve water.
Install Appliances That are Friendly to the Environment
Appliances that have an Energy Star rating are ones worth having in your home because they use less energy. The only way to earn this label is to pass a government inspection, and there is no way for a company to buy its product onto the list.
You should also look for central air units from Cape Fear Air Conditioning & Heating Co. Inc. or a similar company that have a higher SEER rating than what you have in your house. The higher the rating, the more efficient the item is.
    Carpool Whenever Possible
Instead of having each member of the family using their own car, a family can carpool and save on gas and other emissions. It may also be a good idea to walk or bike to school or work if you live close enough. Using public transportation such as a bus or subway may also be an effective way to reduce the emissions created by your family's driving habits.
If you are concerned with how society is treating the environment, you should lead the charge for change by example. By demonstrating the changes that you have made, it could inspire others to follow your lead. Over time, this could cause entire communities or even entire parts of the country to follow through on the momentum that you have helped to create.
  12. HannahWhittenly
Spring weather has a tendency to motivate us to straighten our yards or do a major cleaning in the house. Not only are cobwebs noticeable in the corners but every speck of dirt in your home is visible In fact, now is the time to open the doors and windows, let the house air out and do some major spring cleaning.
If you are reluctant to bring out the harsh and toxic chemicals, there are more Eco friendly options. In addition, many of the green solutions actually do a great job disinfecting and cleaning. For instance, one of the best natural cleaners is vinegar. In truth, it is almost the only cleaner you really need. Vinegar is a multi-purpose product that can be used for laundry, getting rid of bugs, as a disinfectant, an antibacterial and as a cleaner.
    As a Disinfectant
Most disinfectants are quite toxic such as bleach (chlorine), ammonia and hydrochloric acid. In truth, these cleaning agents are not the best to have around, especially if you have children.
Thankfully, vinegar is an excellent alternative as a disinfectant. Not only is it a safer but it is also much cheaper. Plus if the smell of vinegar bothers you, just add a little bit of your favorite essential oil to the mix. The ideal solution for a disinfectant is half water and half vinegar. Just remember, the more you dilute the solution the weaker disinfectant you will have. Add the mixture to a spray bottle to make cleaning easier.
    For Cleaning Windows
Vinegar and water is one of best solutions for cleaning windows. Not only does the vinegar cut through dirt and grime but it leaves your glass shiny. A basic solution would be one part water and one part vinegar. The mixture can also be made ahead of time. If your windows are brand new, like those from Gilkey Windows, then it’s important to make sure that you clean your windows regularly to keep them looking new.
    An All-Purpose Cleaner
The recipe for an all-purpose cleaner is similar to the disinfectant except it is diluted. Add 1 ½ cups water, ½ cup vinegar, 2 teaspoons lemon juice and 3-5 drop of essential oils such as orange or lemon to a spray bottle. Use for cleaning around the house like the walls, counter-tops, blinds, door knobs and other surfaces.
    Floor Cleaner
Vinegar is one of the best floor cleaners around. It disinfects, cleans and cuts through grime. In addition, vinegar leaves a nice shine to your floor without being slippery like some floor cleaners. In a large bucket, add ½ gallon of warm water and 1/3 to ½ cup of vinegar. Soak a sponge or mop with the solution making sure to wring out any excess water. Clean the floor and rinse the mop when needed. Allow to dry.
Vinegar has numerous other uses for the household like getting rid of stubborn odors in a room, , cleaning the toilet, removing stickers from the wall and for cleaning various metals such as copper, brass, silver and pewter.

As recycling technology has improved over the past decade, it has led to some confusion regarding what can and cannot be recycled. Can you throw plastic bags in the recycling bin? Do you have to wash out jars and bottles before recycling? What about Styrofoam and used paper towels? These tips can help you better understand what is recyclable and what should be tossed into the trash.

    Plastic Bags

Although most recycling facilities have the ability to recycle plastic bags, most prefer that they not be included in a recycling container other than those designed for plastic bags. Bags can wrap around and jam recycling equipment and they can contaminate paper bales, according to some recycling companies. Instead of tossing them into your recycling bin, take them to specialized locations for recycling. Many grocery and department stores now have bins available for plastic bag recycling.

    Plastic Bottle Caps

Although caps and plastic bottles are made from different types of plastic, both are recyclable. Keep the cap on the bottle as a loose cap can slip through the sorting lines at a recycling facility and end up in the trash accidentally. Separated caps are also difficult to spot as the recyclable material is sorted going into the machinery.

    Styrofoam

In most cases, Styrofoam is still not recyclable. Styrofoam, which is actually expanded polystyrene, can be contaminated easily. Since recycling facilities do not deep clean the items they process, dirt can be embedded into the recycling material. Styrofoam is also a petroleum product, making it flammable and difficult to break down. However, some recycling companies do have special Styrofoam recycling technology, so you should check with your recycling center to know if they accept Styrofoam.

Although people don’t tend to have a ton of Styrofoam piling up, they are more likely to accumulate a ton of it when they are moving or renovating. This is because it is in the packing supplies or in the boxes of new appliances. If you ever find yourself in this situation and cannot find a place to recycle it, make sure that you get a trash bin from a company like Kingston Skips that specializes in disposing of different types of rubbish so that you can make sure that it is properly taken care of.

    Pizza Boxes

Most people believe that pizza boxes, which often have the recyclable symbol imprinted on them, can be tossed into the recycling bin. However, most programs do not accept pizza boxes due to the food and grease that can accumulate on the box. In fact, most food containers that contain greasy foods are not recyclable, such as Chinese take-out boxes. Because materials are not cleaned at the recycling center, you should rinse food residue from jars and bottles as much as possible. The jar or bottle does not have to be spotless, but most of the food left on the inside should be rinsed. Used napkins and paper towels are not recyclable for the same reasons.

    Juice and Milk Cartons

Although juice and milk cartons are mostly made of paper, they often have a thin coating on the outside. In addition, some juice containers have an aluminum foil lining to keep the juice fresher. Although all three of those items are recyclable, it can be difficult for the center to separate them. Check with your recycling center to be sure that they have the equipment available to separate the different components from juice and milk cartons.

Recycling is one of the best ways to protect the environment. By understanding what is and is not recyclable, you will not only make it easier on those who must collect and process recyclable items, you can also make adjustments in your daily life, avoiding those items that are not recyclable in order to reduce landfill waste.

There has never been a better time to go green with marketing than right now. Long gone are the days of bulky newsletters and flyers. Once you choose the right online marketing platform, your presence will be instantly accessible to whoever owns a computer or a smartphone. Here are 5 of the most effective green marketing models that can help you reach all of your business goals.

    Social Media

Let’s start with the easiest and most common platform. Social media. Social media is a huge deal and is a really great way to draw attention to your business. You want to be sure that you can be found on Instagram, SnapChat, Facebook, Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Flickr, and Twitter and just about any other social media site you can find. Joining these sites will grant you immense opportunities to expose your logo and interact directly with your clients.

Keep in mind, that each of these social media outlets can be used for different purposes. For example:

    ·         Instagram can be used for "behind the scene" action photos.

    ·         Facebook is best for ongoing posts of what the company is currently doing. Be sure to write spectacular social media updates in order to draw the most attention.

    ·         SnapChat is great for mini alert videos.

    ·         StumbleUpon is superb for exposing your newest blog posts in a way that users will share them with one another.

    ·         Twitter allows for quick customer interaction at 140 characters or less.

    ·         Tumblr and Flickr can be your company photo albums.

There is no limit to what you can do, at a very cheap price, if not for free. Be everywhere!

    Community Outreach

Go out in the community representing your business or brand by participating in socially responsible events. Examples include:

    ·         5Ks- from entities such as the American Heart Association, Relay for Life, and World AIDS day.

    ·         charity events

    ·         school fundraisers

    ·         blood drives

    ·         LGBTQ celebrations

    ·         military support events

To be there as a brand, wearing your logos, symbolizes support and active involvement. This can also give you an opportunity to spread the word about the business you believe in and really get involved with your community.

TV, News Sponsorship, Local, and Satellite Radio Advertisement

Yup! These things are still around! Use them! Contact your local news station and ask how you can purchase space time to show your logo during the nightly news. You can also buy a sponsorship that can mention your brand or company at that time. Just Think: "Tonight's community highlight brought to you by [YOUR BRAND]." No need for commercials. Just have relevant sources, such as the news, acknowledge that you have a presence in the community and in the media.

    Guest Blogging Services

Guest blogging is a really great way to boost your business. It helps get your company’s name out there in a fast and respectable manner. Sites such as multifuse.com/guest-blogging-services/ offer great content marketing advice and services such as guest blogging. Places like this are great ways to find experts at keyword rankings, SEO, and those tricky techie variables that can be the “makers or breakers” of your online exposure. Finding these experts and getting help with guest blogging can really be a huge benefit for you. The more your brand is exposed, the better results you’ll get. This means more leads to bring traffic into your website. This can also translate into profits, likes, more free influence, and even strengthening your online credibility.

    Press Releases

Press releases cause the same effect in the public as a “Breaking News” announcement. They are legit, give you a lot of credibility, and show that you are very serious about what you are merchandising. A press release is proportionally effective to the format and wording used. Make sure that you adopt effective and concise language, or else hire a content marketing agency to do it for you.

Go for it! Nothing is an obstacle in a world where online presence is everything. Put your brand out there, and enjoy the beauty of "influencing."

Eco-tourism is one of the fastest growing travel industry segments. Thirty years ago it was in its infancy, but now has blossomed into a dynamic way for people to connect with the nature, environment, and people around them. It’s already changing the way we travel by providing motivation to tread lightly, to respect other cultures, and to respect the diversity of our entire ecosystem. Eco-tourism will continue changing the way we travel in the future.

    More Culturally Sustainable Travel
Eco-tourism is leading the push for more culturally sustainable travel. More and more travelers want to be in touch with local people when they travel. The era of group tours to a foreign country, where tourists are shuttled from tourist place to tourist place, is fast becoming outdated. Eco-tourism is about interacting with the local environment and that includes the local people. Culturally sustainable travel means visiting local places of interest. It means finding out how local people live. It might also include volunteering alongside local people. It means sharing meals and developing friendships.
People like making a conscious decision on how their travel dollars are spent. Tourism accounts for 10% of global GDP and, in many countries, it is one of the top industries. Local spending provides opportunities for the locals.

    More Local, Environmentally-Friendly Foods
Local food is one of the most important changes that eco-tourism is causing in the world of travel. Travelers are embracing local foods. They seek out the new and the different. TV shows exist to show people the foods eaten in different countries around the world. The food that the locals eat typically seems more connected to the local environment than the food found at the local McDonald’s. Tourist restaurants recognize the changes, and they are filling the market niche.
Alongside local foods, people are concerned what is going into their bodies. They want environmentally-conscious foods, and if they are locally grown, even better. This change can be seen in the hotels and airlines. When offering foods, they are attempting to source locally and are touting the quality of the ingredients.

    More Nature-Based Activities
Eco-tourism is bringing about more tourism that embraces the local environment rather than exploiting it. People want to participate in activities that make them a part of the environment. This might mean hiking, sightseeing, bird watching, white water rafting, mountain climbing, rappelling, or going down a zip line. Eco-tourism growth has pushed many resorts to offer these activities.
Alongside the nature experience, many eco-tourists want to leave the environment in a better condition than it was before. Some complete projects like beach cleanings while others just look for reassurances that their participation will lead to a better local environment. Some resorts have begun programs that inform guests on how they are helping the environment and local economy through their stays. Eco-tourism is pushing this trend to happen more and more often.

    Smaller Travel Carbon Footprint
The global aviation industry accounts for 2% of all global carbon emissions. Airlines understand that global warming is affecting our environment and are working to reduce their carbon emissions. American Airlines, for examples, is working to make all of their planes more energy efficient.
The smaller carbon footprint is also found in eco-friendly hotels. While big hotels are normally not thought of as eco-tourism destinations, these establishments understand that today’s environmentally conscious travelers want and are embracing initiatives to use less energy and use environmentally friendly cleaning supplies. They find that reducing energy use is not only good for the environment but also good for the bottom line. A hotel attempting to go greener can take the first step by going paperless and using a hotel engine to handle bookings and reservations. This can reduce the amount of paper used and discarded in the reservation process. Other hotels may find that offering power-saving accommodation options to guests can go a long way towards reducing energy usage.

Increases in travel technology means that eco-friendly travel is easier than ever. They can help people reduce their own travel carbon footprint. Travel technology means that people can book hotels and airlines that help them spend travel dollars in the most environmentally friendly way possible.
Companies are embracing eco-tourism principles as it becomes an ever larger piece of the travel industry. Tourism related businesses are using a smaller carbon footprint, becoming more culturally sustainable, embracing local foods, and providing more nature-based activities. Expect that this trend will continue.

Coal mining has changed in many areas since the early days of commercial mining and certainly from the old boom town days of the late 1800’s. New technology and new philosophies make underground mining faster and easier than ever before. But there is a limit to how much coal is available for people to use for energy. The modern market for coal reflects these facts, and the processes used today make coal accessible and appropriate for the needs of modern society.

    Corrosion Resistant Metals
Corrosion resistant metals will play a huge role in the future of the mining industry. Corrosion refers to the process by which metals are oxidized based on chemical reactions. Metals that resist corrosion are valuable for mining, and inside the depths of the mines, metals corrode easily over time due to all the elements that comprise the coal mines. These metals will allow workers to continue extracting coal for longer periods of time without having to replace their tools so often. Recently in Weir Minerals Africa, slurry valves were replaced with corrosion resistant valves and have benefited from less leakage and rapid wear.

    Proximity Detection
Proximity detection technology allows mining companies to keep track of the resources and the people they work with at all times. When a person or object is in the path of a machine, an alert will go off inside the machine. This can save lives in addition to keeping the machine focused on the real targets of the operation. Proximity detection will save time and money, and has helped everyone stay safer inside the mines so far.

    Ceramic Mineral Processing Technology
Ceramic mineral processing uses some of the newest technology to create dense ceramic components for machine parts. Companies like Ceramic Technology Inc. provide ceramic fabrications and mineral process equipment which now line mine processing machinery, reducing noise. This means the companies save time and money with improved, cleaner, and safer operations. And won’t have to use pressure machines like previous generations did.

Coal mining has evolved tremendously over the years. The days of dangerous mining are now almost completely gone as miners are safer and better protected than ever with the new technology open to them. The work is now more efficient and the evolution of the mining industry has forever changed the way people participate in and view the collection of coal and other resources.

The United States discards a huge amount of waste material every minute, and developing countries aren’t far behind. Some brilliant minds have been able to see piles of refuse as potential income and useful materials, from companies like Lakeshore Recycling to home decorators reusing old fabrics. People everywhere are willing to come up with ways to turn trash into treasure. Recycling is sustainable and profitable, benefiting entrepreneurs around the world and the planet. These developing worlds have been able to use recycling to make their country more sustainable one garbage can at a time.

    Mexico

In developing countries, waste recycling starts at street level. In fact, one percent of the urban populations in developing countries make their living picking up trash. Mexico City has a gigantic trash problem, about 12,000 tons of solid waste per day. One of the worst offenders in plastic bottles. Mexico was found to be the second largest consumer of polyethylene terephthalate bottles, and the city found providing nice blue recycling bins was not empowering the venture and has turned to other means to help get sustainable.
Rethinking incentives, the city set up a vast farmers' market named Mercado del Trueque; and true to citizen values, featured barter. Trash and recyclable waste were exchanged for 'green point' vouchers based on weight. More than 3,000 families showed up with bags of trash on opening day, exchanging it for vouchers to spend on fresh vegetables at the farmers' market. It’s a unique idea to get more citizens involved in recycling and appealing to what would work in their lives.

    Philippines

In the Philippines, events started out a bit less controlled than Mexico City's project, but soon gained speed.
Payatas is one of the most impoverished parts of Manilla, with almost 40 percent of residents unemployed. Rotting waste reeked about the disposal facility, and people dug out nuggets of junk to sell at scavenger shops. Food waste was unearthed and sold to pig farms.
Today the disposal facility is operated by a private manager helping with the Payatas Alliance Recycling Exchange. The ugly landscape of waste material has been dozed over and seeded for a park. Bio vents line the mound, exuding gasses from decomposing waste, used to fire an electricity generator. This generator powers electricity to light the streets of Payatas and a workshop for citizens. Three thousand former scavengers are now employed at the waste recycling facility, integrating the formerly unemployed and junk shop owners into a productive work force moving waste, and improving living conditions at the same time.

    Egypt

Electronic waste is a huge dilemma in most countries, as everyone wants to purchase the latest technology and don’t know how to dispose of old models. In Egypt, it is discarded everywhere. Electronic waste, or E-waste as it’s been termed, presents hazards to those collecting it. The people of Zabaleen district in Cairo obtained an E-waste learning center through CID consulting in 2009. CID consulting is one of Egypt's leading entities in E-waste management. The purpose of the learning center is to offer young people a chance to earn money while learning about plastic and electronic waste recycling. The growing waste in electronics has become a booming business and helped to employ many people in Egypt.

Recycling is a fascinating field for the inventive and the entrepreneur, a treasure trove of unique future possibilities for workers, factories, and even whole countries. With new technologies and green initiatives being pushed all the time, recycling even in third world countries has become possible and sustainable.

Oil spills are major environmental disasters. They can endanger wildlife, destroy ecosystems and cause serious economic damage to communities affected by them. The future of plants, animals and human beings would certainly be better if all future oil spills could be prevented.
End Humanity’s Dependence on Fossil Fuels
Perhaps the simplest way to end oil spills is to gradually reduce the need for oil drilling. Some headway has been made in this direction—hybrid cars that are partially powered by electricity are now available from all major auto manufacturers. Ethanol, which is created from corn, is also gaining popularity as an alternative fuel source. Overall, there are many benefits to ending dependence on oil beyond preventing oil spills. Independence from non-renewable energy sources should certainly be a goal that human civilization aims to achieve in the foreseeable future.
    Hold Oil Companies Accountable
In a free market system, there need to be incentives for businesses to act. Without financial incentive, negligence and pollution become commonplace. This is why holding oil companies financially accountable is absolutely necessary for spill prevention. If oil spills can irreparably harm their profits, companies in the industry will be sure to guarantee they do not happen. Financial punishments can either come from government fines or though the civil court system—either way, the financial punishments must be massive to match the massive profits of these oil companies.
Monitor Oil Drilling Near At-Risk Ecosystems
Another way to fight oil spills is to thoroughly monitor companies drilling for oil near ecosystems that are most at risk for being harmed by a spill. This, of course, requires action from the government. While it is unlikely that all unsafe oil drilling could be stopped this way, petitioning the government to have drilling activities monitored in areas where they could do the most harm is an excellent idea.
    Keeping Equipment in Good Shape
One of the best ways to prevent accidents and disasters, in any industry, is to ensure all equipment is well-maintained and kept in optimal condition. This is also true for any storage containers used, especially the barrels and drums of the oil industry. A specialist from Powerblanket says barrel storage can be difficult for any material that isn’t extremely shelf-stable, meaning oil companies should take great care to prevent any possible damage as a result of inadequate storage.
    4. Be More Vigilant
Overall, oil spills happen due to negligence—they are not created on purpose (with a few historical exceptions). If those responsible for safe drilling would have been more vigilant in their efforts to prevent oil spills, most major spills on record may have been prevented. This should even be the case for regular citizens. While a minor spill originating from the tank of a fishing boat will not have as big of an effect as an industrial-sized spill, it can still pollute the environment.
Oil spills can ruin an ecosystem for plants and animals for generations. We owe it to the environment to try to ensure that another major oil spill does not happen.

In the U.S., mineral rights may be sold separately from property rights. This means that, as a property owner, you may not necessarily own the rights to extract or use any minerals discovered beneath your property. If oil, natural gas or other valuable minerals have been discovered in your area, it's important to understand your rights and what you can do.
    Understanding Mineral Rights
Mineral rights refers to the rights to any mineral found below the surface, including oil, natural gas, gold, and copper. A mineral owner has the right to extract and use the minerals found below the surface of the land. In some cases, a mineral rights transfer grants rights to specific minerals, such as oil only, but it may include all minerals under the ground.
In the United States, mineral rights are included automatically when legal title to the land is transferred, unless ownership is at some point separated. A land owner can separate the mineral rights from the land by selling or transferring the land but retaining mineral rights, selling the rights but retaining the land, or selling the rights to one person and the land to another. After the rights are separated, each sale of the property includes just the land.
Does it Always Matter Who Owns the Rights?
Many homeowners are surprised when they discover that they do not actually own the mineral rights on their property. In many cases, though, property owners have no need to find out if they own the mineral rights. This is because removing minerals is very expensive and potentially damaging to the property.
Property owners who live in areas without historic coal mining, oil or gas drilling, or mineral extraction typically do not need to worry about mineral ownership, as it's unlikely there are many minerals under the land. Because United States law usually prohibits a mineral rights owner from damaging or affecting the use of homes or property on the land, property owners in cities or areas with many structures on small plots of land usually have no need to worry about who owns the mineral rights.
Who owns the mineral rights to the land does become a concern in areas where mineral extraction is typical. Property owners who do not own the mineral rights in an area where natural gas drilling or mining is common may one day hear from the mineral owner.
What Rights Does the Mineral Owner Have
The mineral owner has the right to remove the minerals from the land without obtaining permission from the land owner, or surface owner. These rights usually include the right to use the surface land to access and mine the minerals, which may include excavating a mine or drilling a well. The mineral rights holder can also build improvements such as roadways. The owner of the rights can also lease these rights to extract minerals and then receive income.
In some cases, the rights of the mineral owner are restriction. There may be a time limit on how long the excavation or drilling can last. Many state and local laws also regulate mineral extraction to reduce the impact on the environment and protect the land owner from side effects of the operations.
What You Can Do As a Property Owner
If you do own the mineral rights and you are contacted to buy the mineral rights, you may be offered a lease agreement, which typically gives you a small down payment and then monthly royalty payments based on the value of the minerals produced.
If you are contacted about mineral extraction on your property, it's advisable to seek advice from a mineral rights attorney. This is a very complex area of law, and there may be restrictions on the surface use of the land by the mineral rights owner. An experienced attorney can help you determine who truly owns the mineral rights by tracing deeds back to the first conveyance. If someone is claiming a valid ownership right to the minerals, a specialist from Doré Law Group says you may want to discuss ways to minimize the negative effects of the extraction operations on your property.
Mineral rights is a very complicated area of law. While most property owners never need to know who owns the rights to minerals under their land, this information is important if there is a chance valuable minerals can be discovered and extracted. You can learn more about your rights as the property owner by consulting with an attorney experienced in natural resources law.

It doesn't matter if you want modern, sleek decor or you'd much prefer the shabby-chic look; upcycling can result in treasured pieces you customize to fit your taste. The following is a list of ways to convert trash materials or worn-out chairs, into works of art.

    Decoupaging an Old Chair's Surface
To update a chair that's nothing but an eyesore, gather up newspaper and magazine clippings, multicolored tissue paper, or scraps of fabric leftovers from a recent project. Apply them to the chair's surface using either decoupage glue, or lacquer from a nearby craft store and set aside to dry.

    Reupholstering Dingy or Torn Seats
To fix rips, outdated patterns, or unattractive sun fading, simply reupholster all the tired padding. Quilting is an easy way to upcycle leftover fabric into seating that makes a statement. Crafty people could also use duct tape in varying designs to cover over ugly padding.

Turning Home Improvement Leftovers into Conversation Starters
Did you recently have a custom home builder in Regina revamp your bathroom or kitchen? You can upcycle the items that were replaced into eye-catching seating that is sure to turn some heads. Cut the side out of a claw-footed tub and modify it into a cozy reading nook.

Using Old Chairs to make a Fashionable Bench
When you want to get rid of an old patio set, consider turning the chairs into a bench instead. Line up two or three and use a shipping pallet to create a seating area that joins them all together in a cohesive way. Alternatively, you could line up four or five pieces of plywood in a row to achieve the same effect.

Converting an Old Trunk into a Loveseat
Modify the lid of an old trunk so it permanently sits at a 90-degree angle with the bottom half. Add upholstery to the hollow areas in the top and bottom sections for a comfortable seat and back rest. Attach four wooden legs to raise it off the ground.

    Relying on Old Accessories
Gather up the family's old belts and weave them in and out of each other to create new upholstery. This can also be done with strips of cloth from old clothing items as well.

Upcycling is a fantastic way to refurnish a home and add a decorative touch while also getting rid of useless junk you might have just lying around. The possibilities are as endless as your miscellaneous materials and imagination.

Why should we worry about water? It's everywhere, right? Well, as it turns out, there's quite a few good reasons we should be concerned.

    The Problem is Now

If it wasn't already clear, it has become crystal clear during the water shortages of the past few years: we live on a planet with finite resources, and one of those resources is clean water. Recent droughts in arid parts of North America and the World have put our problems with water into sharp focus. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee (which, incidentally, takes 37 gallons of water to produce per cup, from start to finish).

    Water Scarcity Raises Food Prices

Droughts across the western part of the United States have sent farmers scrambling to compete with residential and industrial water use in order to irrigate their fields. Talk of a California Dust Bowl has farmers, ecologists, and economists all worried about the far reaching effects of poor water consumption. The costs of sparse harvests get passed on to consumers in the grocery store.

    Our Aquifers are Drying Up

The primary source of our fresh and clean water in North America is under our feet. These vast aquifers are what have allowed us to take our supply of fresh and clean water for granted, but they're not limitless. According to the USGS, the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the largest in the world, has declined by 50% thickness in some areas.

    Personal Consumption Makes a Difference

You may not think that there's a lot you can do, but the EPA estimates that 10% of water use in the US comes from residential and commercial sources--things like cooking or bathing. Eco-minded plumbing experts from Imagine Plumbing say that the average domestic water use in the US and Canada is nearly 100 gallons per capita.

Even more importantly, agriculture represents a huge source of water consumption--and what you eat can make the difference. The Sierra Club estimates that 1,850 gallons of water are used to produce a single steak! Eating lower on the food chain can make a difference in water usage for agriculture.

    Water Scarcity Can Create Conflict

No one wants to get involved in a border war. In arid parts of the world, this happens over water. Water is fundamental to life--we drink it, we clean with it, we irrigate crops with it. A resource this precious can't become scarce without causing conflict.

    Our Alternatives Are Expensive

When we've used up all of the freshwater reserves, we'll have no choice but to start treating non-fresh water. Options include wastewater treatment and desalinization, but both can be pricey--certainly more expensive than pumping it up from the ground. While we may have plenty of ocean water, getting it into a useable state is neither easy nor cheap.

Water is something we too often take for granted. Don't forget to take a look around and imagine what life would be like without it.

The key to living healthy starts with farming green. Organic farming is the most recent trend that has now become a billion-dollar industry. Millions of farmers are participating in new techniques that reduce the reliance on heavy machinery and toxic pesticides. If you are interested in green farming, know that this industry is new and growing fast. Learn about a few initiatives that have grown in this past decade.

    Organic Farming
Organic farming is the boldest and most environmentally safe step farmers today have taken. This type of farming involves using few or no chemicals to plant crops and the fertilizers used are all natural without toxic or artificial ingredients.
Many crops planted into the ground are eaten or put into skincare products. Organic farming has reduced the harmful effects associated with toxins and pest immunity.
Farmers like organic methods because machinery is usually not involved and the instructions are easy to follow. Becoming organic means using the tools and materials that come from nature.

    No-Tillage Farming
Soil is essential in any sustainable farming plan. No-till farming reduces the use of tilling to break up the soil which causes less damage, such as excessive drying and loss of nutrients. Instead of tilling the soil, farmers use herbicides to get rid of weeds. They engage in crop diversity to reduce the growth of weeds naturally. The use of heavy machinery is reduced, and the soil retains its natural state.

    Recycling
Recycling is not a new technique but has increased in popularity over the years. In front of most suburban homes are recycling bins that were not found there a few decades ago. Most products nowadays are being reused and recycled. Glass, metal, and wood come in recycled versions that are exactly the same as the original ones. Green farmers are encouraged to buy recycled tools and most already use quality products like Accurate Products Inc. rubber grommets for their shipping and harvesting processes. Many of them recycle the materials used to produce crops. They build compost piles consisting of soil, leaves and rotting food and are used as natural fertilizers.

In the past, green farming was an experimental approach to traditional farming. Few people knew about the idea or its practices. Today, it is an industry that is internationally practiced and regulated by governments it is important to know how farmers have reduced their effects on the environment.
