  1. From the album: The cruel life inside a factory farm

As you can see, a female pig in a gestation crate has no freedom of movement, and barely even has room to lay down.

    Female pigs

From the album: The cruel life inside a factory farm

Female pigs used for breeding (breeding sows) spend most of their lives confined in gestation crates so narrow that they cannot turn around.
  3. From the album: The cruel life inside a factory farm

Confined in metal and concrete pens with slatted floors, these pigs will live in these conditions until they reach slaughter weight of 250 pounds.

  5. Former Vice President, climate activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore has switched to a vegan diet due to environmental concerns. A Forbes article mentioned that Gore, who they claimed was a “newly turned vegan”, was considering an investment in a San Francisco startup that works to replace eggs with a plant-based formula. The Washington Post caught up on this, investigated further and found “an individual familiar with Gore's decision” who told the paper that Gore had taken up a vegan diet several months ago. Gore, whom in 2007 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for their efforts to inform the public about the dangers of climate change, have received a lot of criticism over the years for living in a big mansion and consuming meat. In 2009, during an interview on ABC, Gore said: “I'm not a vegetarian, but I have cut back sharply on the meat that I eat. […] And it's absolutely correct that the growing meat intensity of diets across the world is one of the issues connected to this global crisis -- not only because of the [carbon dioxide] involved, but also because of the water consumed in the process.” Rajendra Pachauri, chairperson of the IPCC, have stressed the importance of cutting back on meat. “Among options for mitigating climate change, changing diets is something one should consider,” Pachauri have said. The meat industry is responsible for about one fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than the world's transport sector pollutes. Livestock farming also use a lot of land, about 70% of the world's total agriculture landis dedicated today to livestock production - that's around 25% of the planet's total land area. It’s not surprising that Gore has switched to a vegan diet due to environmental concerns. The environmental costs and damages done by the meat industry to our climate are obvious. But it’s surprising that he did not do this to bigger fanfare and publicity. Photo credit: Center for American Progress Action Fund (cc)
  6. That's a beautiful video, but it felt like a viral ad for Timberland. Some office examples in the video also felt silly compared to the environmental damage the corporation is most likely responsible for during the production of the products or services it sells. Regarding the question: "are trees always good for the environment?" I would say yes, trees are always good for the environment. But if you want to nit-pick, high-latitude forestation, in places such as Siberia, may increase local temperatures, and thus contribute - rather than mitigating - to climate change. But this effect is mostly "neutral or perhaps warming" [Wikipedia]. So I am not sure how big of a threat this really is. I would also like to stress that, yes, recycling is awesome and green. Everyone should do it. But, like the video says, it's better to reuse or reduce. Again, it was a pretty video and I look forward to your next one!

Thanks, Simon! I love it, aswell. :) This photo was taken in Syngapore. It depicts the interior of one of the five Eco Biomes in the city - truly marvelous structures, each one of which is home to a specific Eco system. You can check out my article here for more photos and information: http://www.fubiz.net/usersstuff/futuristic-biome-structures-in-singapore-offer-breath-taking-sights-2/

Wow, that looks amazing! Thank you for sharing. :)

  9. This is so true! Climate change is more than just weather. The climate crisis impacts all aspects of human civilization. We already know that drought helped spark the bloody conflict in Syria. Just imagine what kind of devastating political and social effects global warming will bring. Hopefully we'll be able to stay civilized, but considering humanity's history I am very doubtful.
  10. While grocery shopping I found Tzay in the freezer. Tzay is supposed to be "a truly unique vegetarian delicacy created by Thai monks. Marinated and woked with chilli, ginger and good conscience." Sounds tasty!     I have never tasted Tzay before, but I will try and cook it with some baked potatoes later tonight.   Have anyone else here heard about Tzay? What do you think about it? Do you know about any tasty recipe that involves Tzay?

  13.   I see the problem now. Apparently it's not possible to use the IP.Board Mobile skin on your computer.    Also: Green Blog will be moved to a new location this weekend (most likely on Saturday evening or Sunday) and we will have some downtime during that time.
  14. Hello Annie Reynolds, welcome to Green Blog! :)

  15.   I am aware that the frontpage doesn't look OK on mobile devices. That will hopefully be sorted out this weekend. All the other pages should be working though.    But I don't really understand why you only see a white screen when you visit green blog on your desktop web browser. Which operating system and web browser do you use?
