According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), roughly one-third of all food produced globally for human consumption is lost or wasted each year. This statistic is not only concerning from a social and economic perspective, but it also has significant implications for climate change.

In this blog, we will explore the link between food waste and climate change, how food waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and what we can do to reduce food waste to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Connection between Food Waste and Climate Change

Food waste has a significant impact on climate change. When food is wasted, all the resources that went into producing that food, including water, energy, and fertilizers, are also wasted. This process generates greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, which trap heat and contribute to global warming.

Food waste also contributes to climate change by generating methane, a potent greenhouse gas. When food waste is sent to landfills, it decomposes and produces methane gas, which is approximately 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of its global warming potential. Methane is a significant contributor to climate change, accounting for approximately 16% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, food waste also contributes to deforestation, which further exacerbates climate change. To produce food, vast areas of land are cleared, leading to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When food is wasted, the deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing that food become unnecessary and contribute to climate change.

Food Waste and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions from food waste occur throughout the food supply chain, from production to consumption. The process of growing, harvesting, and transporting food requires significant energy inputs, primarily in the form of fossil fuels. When food is wasted, all these energy inputs are also wasted, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

When food is disposed of, it decomposes, producing methane gas. The methane produced by food waste is equivalent to approximately 7% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of this methane is generated in landfills, where food waste is dumped, and organic matter decomposes in the absence of oxygen.

Food waste also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions through transportation. When food is transported, it requires energy in the form of fuel. When food is wasted, all the energy used to transport that food becomes unnecessary, and the associated greenhouse gas emissions are wasted.

Reducing Food Waste to Mitigate Climate Change

·         Reduce food waste at the source - Farmers, food manufacturers, and retailers can take steps to reduce food waste at the source. This includes improving harvesting techniques, reducing overproduction, and improving storage and transportation methods.

·         Encourage consumers to reduce food waste - Consumers can reduce food waste by planning meals, buying only what they need, and storing food properly. Food waste can also be reduced by repurposing leftovers and composting food scraps.

·         Implement policies and regulations - Governments can play a crucial role in reducing food waste by implementing policies and regulations that encourage food waste reduction. This includes food labeling standards, tax incentives for food donation, and restrictions on food waste disposal.
