Mohamed Zakariya is a calligrapher, turner, metal worker. He combines classical standards with modern sensibility to produce works on fantasies in wood, paper, and instruments from the history. He has no formal education, and he learned his expertise in aerospace-industry machine shops in the Los Angeles atelier of Oscar Meyer. At Istanbul’s Research Center he developed Islamic Art, History, and Culture, and that’s where he earned two licenses in Islamic calligraphy. He’s the first Westerner to do so.
