DESERTEC project, Sahara Sun could power Europe by 2050

    By Mark Piazzalunga

Sahara desert climate is hot and arid, everybody knows it. So how can this simple and well-known fact become the idea to power a continent like Europe? Let’s start from the principle: renewable energy is the future of energy; we assume that this sentence is true since all facts gets to this point. Second principle: European territory is restricted and allows the construction of a few plants that could use renewable energy. Paradoxically, countries like Africa have renewable sources, particularly

Black Friday Promotes Over-Consumption and Waste

    By Joseph Ramondeli

Black Friday Promotes Over-Consumption and Waste               Every year Thanksgiving weekend is overshadowed by Black Friday and in recent years Cyber Monday as well. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time when families can get together, even if it’s just for a day or dinner, to talk and reconnect. However every year more American’s are focused on shopping. Stores are now open by 8:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day resulting in people sitting at the dinner table with their families while browsing

Conferencing Climate Change: Teamwork or Tug-of-war?

    By Megan Bonetti

India. Culture, cows and rubbish. As an Aussie living for a short time in India it is such an intriguing country. Indians love their diverse nation yet they use the streets like rubbish dumps. Even my friends here tell me it’s ok to throw my paddle-pop wrapper out the car window. I can’t… so I just hold it tight and wait till I get home. Growing up in Australia, those ‘emu hunts’ in primary school have willed my littering days away. Yet I suspect that even my household trash bin will just be dum

The problem with r/atheism

Blatantly false, and often islamophobic, stories like this one that is constantly being voted to the frontpage is the reason why I am not subscribing to r/atheism anymore. There's just too little reason in that subreddit.

Frågar man fem personer lär man få fem olika svar.

Varghatet i Sverige

Man tvingade d

Richard Dawkins on the opposition to same-sex marriage

Richard Dawkins sarcastically puts the opposition to same-sex marriage into perspective in this tweet. "Forget global warming, forget war, poverty, disease. What REALLY matters is whether other people, in private, sleep with their own sex." People sure has strange priorities...

Hugo Chavez on climate change and capitalism

This is the full text of Hugo Chavez’s speech at the December 2009 Copenhagen climate conference. In the speech Chavez linked climate change and capitalism, saying if the climate were a bank, they [the rich governments] would already have saved it. Translation by Kiraz Janicke. - - - - Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, Excellencies, friends, I promise that I will not talk more than most have spoken this afternoon. Allow me an initial comment which I would have liked to make as part of th

EDF suing climate activists for £5 million

The environmental activists who last year protested against government plans to build 20 new climate killing gas-fired power stations in the UK are now being sued for £5 million by the French state-owned energy company EDF. If EDF wins these activists face bankruptcy and the very possibility of losing their homes. Besides this personal tragedy, a win for EDF could also have far-reaching consequences for the whole environmental movement in the UK as it would deter other organizations from tak

Photos: Five years after São Paulo's ban on visual pollution

São Paulo, one of the world’s largest metropolis, issued a ban on outdoor advertising in 2007. Despite heavy criticism from corporations and ad-agencies Brazil’s largest city remains ad-free to this day. This is how São Paulo looks like five years after the ban on visual pollution. "The law is a rare victory of the public interest over private, of order over disorder, aesthetics over ugliness, of cleanliness over trash... For once in life, all that is accustomed to coming out on top in Brazil

Sweden's recycling system is so effective the country has to import garbage

The effectiveness of the Swedish recycling and garbage system has been making the news recently. Here's one story about it: Sweden imports waste from European neighbors to fuel waste-to-energy program I am not sure what to think of this really, an effective garbage system is good but... The 96% recycle rate that this blog post talks about sounds amazing (the official number is actually 98,6%!). But it's not a completely honest number. All the waste that is sent to one of these incinera

Greenpeace's cookie warning

Since a while back website owners are required by EU law to offer clear information about the use of cookies on the website to its users. It's a stupid and pointless law. But Greenpeace has found a fun way to notify their visitors about all this: "This site uses cookies -- tiny bits of code that help us keep track of your interests and auto-fill petitions. We also use cookies to improve site performance and find better ways to make it easier for you to take action and make change. The Europea

Current TV has been sold to Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera acquires Al Gore's Current TV cable network, reports Forbes and the New York Times. Al Jazeera is apparently planning to scrap the programming lineup and replace the Current brand with a new network called Al Jazeera America which will have a focus on international news. Forbes has also published Current CEO Joel Hyatt's memo about the purchase, in which the CEO touts Al Jazeera's journalistic work: "We were impressed with all that we learned about Al Jazeera and its journalist
