  1. Not sure if there was a topic on genetically modified rice & other food, couldn't find it so I started one! Great video here: Apparently the GMO rice (& its weed killer that it's resistant to!) are being discussed by the EU though the herbicide is to be banned from EU in 2017! Why are they even discussing this?? It's also alarming that GMO food can be used as food for animals!! In our little town, if they don't say they want GMO-free food for cows, the farmers just get the one with GMO!! This is really worrying!! Apparently there has been (illegal) GMO rice in China in 2005 already: There was GMO rice in USA too: & in Phillipines: & even in Europe as food for animals!! & So.. will it really come to this, that only food one grows oneself is semi-safe? & how can I cultivate rice??! /sigh/
  2. Shop Green

Hi! Interesting shop! Am especially pleased to see hemp/wool twine or 'yarn' as I never saw it anywhere before! (& didn't know it existed!) What could be improved..? Hmm.. I think you could make the text on the intro page shorter (so people don't need to scroll so much) Also you might wanna check to keep things consistent when saying 'I/we'.. Personally I would also love to know more about the fabrics & dyes used.. eg in what conditions the hemp is grown, is it organic too, or not? etc
  3. I agree that people may find it difficult to remember the different extensions... .eco might be a nice idea - trouble is, if many companies would use it for greenwashing? (especially if it were more expensive than .com or others) for example, the companies trying to look 'green' would buy the .eco & try to present themselves as 'green'-?!! would there be special criteria who can get a .eco domain name? (if only really green people/organizations or businesses could get it, & it would cost the same as .com, it might be okay..?) who would determine who can get it though?
  4. When Being Lazy is Good for the Planet

He he, we don't weed too much either Some weeds are okay so the sun doesn't dry out the soil too much, & too many can be - well, too much.. so some 'action' is still needed too.. (as we don't have organic straw to use as 'bedding' for the plants! - straw is supposed to be better against snails than just other plants or leftover lettuce or such..)
  5. GMO rice - would you eat it?

If it looks anything like our Slovenian government...?!! yes, indeed.. They just signed a law about 'co-existence' of GMO & non-GMO plants... (How can they even co-exist? sigh..) There is some 'protection' in it (about farmers getting 'compensation' if their crops get polluted with GMO), I do wonder how long & how good this protection would be in practice..?!! - as far as I know it was quite the opposite worldwide - farmers had to pay to have the privilege to be polluted with GMO stuff?!!
  6. How green is nuclear power?

What do you mean about antimatter, arctics_huha? as far as I know that is still in 'science fiction' stages..? any idea when they intend to make it feasible & how dangerous it could be? Simon & others, can you take a look at this blog & comment? - it's about nuclear in USA, & how new nuke plants are supposed to be cheaper? The second article posted there is interesting too: it's about what the Obama administration is discussing?! (Of course Obama is from a nuke state, & it's expected of him to sort of go into the nukes, though he was dancing a fine line of not saying no or yes in the elections!) I wonder where he will turn!! (& fear that unless something really unexpected happens, they will go the nuke route too? though it sounds interesting where the article says no new ones have been built for 25 years-?! wow..!! Maybe that is part of the reason for the 'new wave' - older plants might need to be recommissioned or closed down? I wonder..)
  7. GMO rice - would you eat it?

Yes, stupidity, what is your name? Oh, your name is MONEY!! And - Bayer?!! (Or EU regulations?! Let's hope not!!)
  8. Green Electronics PDF Guide

Thanks! I'll check it out... :)
  9. Go Green by Driving Less

YAY for going by train, Steve!! It's really a shame that car fuel/driving by car is cheaper here in Slovenia too!! if trains (& buses etc) were significantly cheaper, more people would gladly use them.. one can nicely nap on a train or bus, which is a good thing! & they wonder why so many people drive & why the train company is in crisis! (a vicious circle then!) Also, it would be great to have a law that all cargo traffic that just passes through our country must go via train - instead, we get old bad trucks crowding & polluting & destroying the highways!!
  10. GMO rice - would you eat it?

Oh, & here is the Greenpeace petition to sign - I've already signed it! They are asking "all governments around the world to protect consumers and farmers, their crops and fields by rejecting Bayer’s GM rice, and to stop GM rice field trials"!!
  11. How green is nuclear power?

There was a discussion panel on Slovenian TV the other day... The journalist was asking several 'older white men' about energy... some even made sense with some comments, but said absolute rubbish in the next sentence.. Slovenia has pledged a bigger percentage of renewable energy by __________ to EU & one man said: 'Do you know how many solar panels you'll have to build to achieve that % if you build the 2nd nuke powerplant?!!' /The minister gulped a bit lol!/ & also, when someone talked about how important renewable energy is, the journalist said, 'And the nuclear powerplant is the most important thing then?' lol!! /She rocks!! :)/ Everyone is talking of renewable energy, & in Slovenia they are still soo focused on the coal plant, block 6 - & nuke, block 2 (2nd nuke)! And the coal plant alone is responsible for the whole budget for the next 10 years!! 'So there will be no money for the nuke then?' the journalist asked. 'Noo, we're looking for strategic partners' - apparently many have been walking around, asking to be 'strategic partners/investors! So why is this a good opportunity for Slovenia? Why can't we be an investor somewhere else too? & let them deal with toxic trash & problems that may arise?? France is one of the dirtiest & most toxic & most polluted states in EU - please don't give them as example!! & guess who is asking to be 'strategic investors'?! The French & the Japanese - where the main builders of the nuke technology are!! This is like the McDonalds franchise almost!! & guess who is building the coal plant extension? The French! & it's supposed to be 'much greener'?! (hmm, I wonder..?!) The contract has been signed by the previous government & will cost us too much, because prices of energy were higher then!! Why is the government telling German people to go solar & giving subsidies? Cause they banned the nukes!! Who will subsidize solar if they plan to build nukes & coal plants?! Personally, I don't think a solar panel on the roof would be 'ugly' - we have water solar heating panels & it's beautiful! I'd just love to see some research if it affects health of inhabitants first.. If not, you can put solar cells on my roof anytime!! There are lots of roofs & barns to put the solar cells on, & interested people!! - if only the technology were cheaper or more subsidized! It seems everyone would have to find own investors like the nuke people-?!! Oh wait, the investors find them!! wonder why!!
  12. Who is Greener?

he he wealthy women are okay then? & poor men? interesting! :)
  13. Earth Day 2009

Simon, I know socialism is not communism, lol!! we were taught in primary school that we live in socialism, while 'communism is the ideal we are heading toward' (& will never achieve) or something like that... also, Yugoslavia was socialistic by declaration, while some people just called us 'communist' country.. I think eg Poland or Chekhoslovakia were more 'communist' because they were under more direct Russian influence.. Do tell about your trash!! Looking forward to it! And maybe a bit about recycling/waste management/incineration & such in Sweden too?
  14. Earth Day 2009

This seems very interesting!! Maybe you can post pics & a description some time? (or is it on your blog or website?)
  15. Eco-friendly pesticide?

As for the original post - I googled 'AgraQuest toxic' & this came up: quoting from How eco were they then really...?! /not sure how accurate the sites above are, just googled them up.. which is what I recommend everyone do if thinking about a pesticide, herbicide or whatever../
  16. Eco-friendly pesticide?

I am reluctant about 'eco friendly' pesticides & herbicides & such too.. If you watched the movie: 'The World according to Monsanto' (excellent film, I highly recommend it!!) you saw that Monsanto made an 'eco' weed killer that was later on found toxic - & there were lawsuits against false advertising!! Some effects may be long-term so anything new on the market is, well - hmm? to be proven.. If you do find anything in the shops, research it extensively & ALWAYS read the small print!! Ideally, one would live without the iffy chemicals.. My parents still use some (especially for the peaches, Dad says we'd have nothing without some spraying..) There are some DIY eco variants too, yeah.. like from herbs etc. About snails, I also read coffee on the ground (remains after cooking) can divert them, or sawdust? (we have compost next to the garden too, so it may be a factor indeed!) My Mum put boiling water on some of the snails & slugs & then put the concoction around the endangered piece of the garden - she says there are less snails & slugs there now! (not sure if this is the effect of the potion or of the fact she picked them up & boiled them?) A friend who took courses in biodynamics says they make a concoction out of any 'bad pests' - special procedure.. apparently even deer stayed away after someone made this with a piece of deer skin? /it does sound slightly unbelievable though - but who knows?/
  17. Who is Greener?

He he.. it's difficult to say.. We had an argument about this at another blog of course men said they were greener (cause women buy tons of makeup etc)& we women said we are greener - cause many women are the main household decision makers & are switching to greener household products like detergents etc. I think it really depends on the person.. In our household, Dad is more energy-aware (he bought the CFLs & triple-glazed some windows, others are double-glazed etc., he installed the solar water heating panels), & Mum & me are better at recycling & making less waste & going zero waste.. Both Mum & Dad work in the garden, we compost etc... I've read it before that men love CFLs while some women hate 'em.. (it was said that because the harsh light is too harsh & beauty imperfections are seen personally I disagree with that - I don't care about imperfections - I'm perfect! lol - just kidding! , my eyes suffer from the CFLs! )
  18. Earth Day 2009

hmm.. I think both left- & right-wing governments can be bad!! Remember I come from a country that used to be part of socialist ex-Yugoslavia, & some parts really have had a lot of industrial pollution, it's the same in most of other ex-communist countries of Eastern Europe etc. too!! (okay, it's debatable if Slovenia is Eastern Europe, we like to think of ourselves as 'Middle Europe' like Austria or Switzerland! ) capitalism has brought more garbage here (& too many supermarkets & too much choice!) - truth is there was sometimes too little choice before, & the little choice was sometimes environmentally bad too!! basically there was less household garbage before, & now there is more - but some industry standards became stricter! (while some standards & regulations, like for air pollution, became worse! /sigh/) I think wealthy people need to start being aware that they too can get ill & die (& develop iffy allergies or severe health problems) if the air quality is horrible or water or land is toxic.. we are all just human.. expensive medicines & doctors can help a bit, but noone can survive in a really toxic environment.. (even if they have trips to Hawaii every week!!) I think more and more people in general are becoming aware of this, hopefully rich people will become aware even sooner, as they may have access to more information!! Simon, YAY for taking a look at your trash & making a difference!! Do tell how it goes!! :)
  19. "EWaste" Exports - a Fair Trade Solution?

Hey Robin, the 1st link doesn't work! (it takes me to the discussion of Battlestar Galactica on this forum-?!) Is the 2nd link a transcript of the YouTube vid? I'm personally interested in this issue too, I hope our old TVs & monitors aren't dumped illegally in Africa or such!! more transparency is needed in this area!! total transparency, that is! (every waste company needs names & addresses &/or links to other companies taking the TVs/monitors..) with today's technology, all this could be totally tracked & shown online! I would love to see films of procedures, what is done with TVs/cathode tubes that broke..? (& with the 'waste'..?) How are they transported so they don't break? Basically, knowing more could help people trust more.. & ideally people could get converters for free or very cheap!! so they could continue using old TVs!! old TVs do use more electricity, so ideally there would be a plan for solar energy or something.. (put a solar panel on your roof, get a free converter? just an idea! ) lead glass from cathode tubes is very toxic, & I read it's not in high demand (cause no or very few CRT monitors/TVs are produced..) what to make of the lead glass then? I do wonder about this copper smelter that is mentioned - what will they do with that glass & how? Do you know?
  20. Any BSG fans here?

He he, I LOVE Battlestar Galactica, that is the ORIGINAL series!! at least I loved them when I watched them as a kiddie!! everyone had such awesome hair..!! :)
  21. CFL Bulbs-Save Money and the Planet!

Hm, I'm a bit sceptical of the CFL bulbs.. Of course they save energy, well, they do contain mercury & while whole ones are collected & hopefully recycled properly (still to learn more on this!) it's still a bit of an iffy issue what to do with the broken ones?! (& it depends from council to council as far as I know..?) Also, the harsh light from CFLs bothers me quite a bit.. (harsh for the eyes..) we do have them in rooms where the lights are turned on for long periods of time.. (living room, kitchen..) where you just turn lights on & off, they're not good (it's best to leave CFL lights on for at least 15 minutes, if I remember it right).. so I hope the LED bulbs & other more environmentally friendly bulbs will get developed soon.. & also, if governments intend to build nuclear powerplants anyway, does it make much sense to promote & use CFLs so heavily (potential toxic waste problem due to mercury)? I really need to learn more about how they are recycled & what happens with broken ones worldwide! :)
  22. Is IKEA Entering the Eco-Friendly Car Market?

lol!! Are people car-pooling to Ikea? or what? /to work or shop there? :)/
  23. Norway may ban gas cars after 2015

Mountainhiker, yeah, progress may take time.. Do you have any numbers of 'years ago' & how bad it was then? It would be great if things could happen a bit quicker though!! IMO there's a lot of technology available already, if a fraction of military budget would go into this, A LOT could be done!! Why put zillions of $$$ into industries that annihilate (at best) & not into industries that bring health & happiness to people?!!
  24. Norway may ban gas cars after 2015

Interesting thinking, Brettbh! & interesting numbers, Simon! I would LOVE to live with no car, it's MUCH easier in the city than in the beautiful countryside though.. still need to study the 'live with no car in countryside' more! at least the 'crisis' has made people buy less cars - what has the government done? - gave 'em subsidies! akh! the whole car industry needs to become more sustainable! do people really need 3 cars? can we carpool more? also, could better quality cars be produced that could last longer? since Fiat has bought Chrysler the car industry has been changing.. it will be interesting to see how it changes.. it would be good if environment (& environmental activists!) played a significant role in this!
  25. International Green Summit

Thank you for the information! It definitely sounds like an interesting event! So if I understand you right, both students & other members of public can attend all days & all parts of the event? (students for free, others for donation of 1 Euro?) Great interview! I recommend everyone who's interested to listen to it! I'm also wondering, is this the 1st such worldwide event? Also, will there be online support with info & people & scientists & companies there? I totally agree that it needs to be easier for the average person (& community!!) to go green - as so many fantastic things are happening worldwide already, & often even local authorities are impressed with ideas of what is happening abroad or in another municipality!! will send you my email address...
