About this blog

As everyone will tell you, moving is a costly business. There are many things that are not worth scrimping on, but there are a few ways to go about saving some hard-earned when hiring a moving firm or renting a moving truck.

If you opt to utilize the services of a moving company, there are a handful of ways to cut costs. Some of the following tips also apply to the renting of a truck.

1. Reduce the load

In other words, dump the stuff you don’t need. If you can’t sell it, either give it to local charity or dump it in the trash. Money equals weight here, and the less weight, the less you will pay.

2. Move in the off-season

Off-season for moving is avoiding June and July and avoiding the first few days of the month and the last few days of the month.

3. Book early

The sooner you book, the lower the rate, within reason, of course. It’s a bit like booking an airfare in this respect.

4. Flexibility

Try to be flexible with respect to the time that your moving company can pick up your goods. If you can work within their timeframe, ask for a price cut.

5. Cut down on the service options

A moving company has different services and for each one they will tag it with a charge. So, ask in advance about potential costs to your move. Some of the additional services offered may include expedited service fees, accessorial charges, long haul charge, flight charge, shuttle service, and long carry charge. You can avoid these if you plan in advance. There shouldn’t ever be any surprise charges at the end of a move.

6. Move in immediately

Be sure that when you arrive at your new property that you have the keys handy and you can get in straight away. And for when the moving truck arrives, have payment ready. If there’s much delay in either of these matters, there could be added fees.

7. Larger or specialty items

If you have some large stuff, find out about how they will be moved. Boats, snowmobiles, a piano, for example, will cost more to move. If you are going to drive to your new place, you may consider hiring a trailer and moving the items yourself.

8. Appliances

Appliances may require handling and packing of a specialist nature. And your moving company might ask for extra payment if they do it. So, ask them, and if they do and it’s costly, then do it yourself instead.

In the Pasadena area? You can be sure there’s no hidden costs with this Pasadena moving company.
