About this blog
Owning classic cars is like owning a little piece of history. Classic cars are unique, special and one of a kind which is great for a collector. It’s not great for finding a car mechanic, however. Not all mechanics will work on classic vehicles. Vintage cars are less complex under the hood than modern vehicles which have intricate electronics and computer systems. It seems like that would make vintage cars more attractive to work on but it actually makes it harder. Less experienced mechanics have probably never worked on cars without computers. Additional obstacles are the time or expense involved in fixing classic cars.
Here are factors to keep in mind when you are hunting for a good mechanic:
Finding Mechanics
Luckily there are resources available to help you find auto mechanics. CarTalk.com has a mechanic finder that allows you to locate technicians in your area by specialty. They provide a list of mechanics within your designated distance. There are also consumer reviews for you to look into. Using this tool is a great starting point, but you still need to ensure the mechanic is capable of handling your car.
Ask Around
The best referrals come from the people in your life that you trust. If you are a classic car collector talk to all your contacts in your community. When you go to car shows ask around, tap into the wealth of classic car knowledge all around you! Also try to find owners with the same make and model. See who everyone is using for their mechanic needs and find out who to use and most importantly who not to use!
Make some Calls
After you’ve compiled some options from the internet and your classic car contacts it is time to make some phone calls. Talk to the owner or project manager at the repair shop and get a feel for their experience. Do they sound knowledgeable? Have they worked on your make, model and year of vehicle before? One big red flag is a mechanic that is eager to get you off the phone. If they aren’t willing to talk to you and try to earn your business they are not worth your time or money.
