DESERTEC project, Sahara Sun could power Europe by 2050

    By Mark Piazzalunga

Sahara desert climate is hot and arid, everybody knows it. So how can this simple and well-known fact become the idea to power a continent like Europe? Let’s start from the principle: renewable energy is the future of energy; we assume that this sentence is true since all facts gets to this point. Second principle: European territory is restricted and allows the construction of a few plants that could use renewable energy. Paradoxically, countries like Africa have renewable sources, particularly solar, in abundance but scarce funds to make the best of these resources. Now find the connection. Is it possible to produce huge amounts of solar energy in Africa and transport them to Europe through energy infrastructures? Apparently yes, according to DESERTEC project developers and supporters. And what is DESERTEC? It’s an initiative of the Club of Rome (a global think tank that has its headquarters in Switzerland) started in 2009. Directly from the official website of the project (Desertec.org): "The DESERTEC concept was developed by a network of politicians, scientists and economists from around the Mediterranean, from which was born the DESERTEC Foundation. Demonstrates a way to provide climate protection, energy security and the development of sustainable energy generation from sites where renewable energy sources are at their most plentiful." In practical terms? Connect renewable energy power plants in Africa to Europe through a network of HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) systems. The Foundation target is to build several renewable power plants of various types (mainly wind, photovoltaic and solar concentration) throughout North Africa. To support the project financially, the Foundation and other 12 companies (including Deutsche Bank, E.ON, RWE and ABB) created an industrial initiative: Dii GmbH. The construction project would continue until 2050 and for that date, the cost is estimated at € 400 billion, which means $ 546,720,000,000, approximately seven times Bill Gates’ fortune. It’s little bit expensive (life on Mars seems cheaper) but the entire network could provide Europe with the 15-20% of electricity that it needs. We must also consider the drastic decrease of pollution, direct effect of the project. This project isn’t just an idea but it seems an accurate and long-term plan. This could be an opportunity to connect two continents and to give them economic opportunities and jobs. There could be some problems like the wars and the instability of some of North Africa countries or how to get all 40 nations to agree to an arrangement for subsidizing the green electricity. There’s also the possibility to build the plants in Europe, just $ 54 billion more, and doing some math it brings to a shocking number: €2 per citizen per year to keep tens of thousands of jobs in Europe -- and to prevent Europe from becoming dependent on foreign countries for its electricity. Well, the project just started and it has the funds to go forward. We can't wait to see the results. Photo from Desertec.org

Conferencing Climate Change: Teamwork or Tug-of-war?

    By Megan Bonetti

India. Culture, cows and rubbish. As an Aussie living for a short time in India it is such an intriguing country. Indians love their diverse nation yet they use the streets like rubbish dumps. Even my friends here tell me it’s ok to throw my paddle-pop wrapper out the car window. I can’t… so I just hold it tight and wait till I get home. Growing up in Australia, those ‘emu hunts’ in primary school have willed my littering days away. Yet I suspect that even my household trash bin will just be dumped across the road for the cows to eat or worse still, burnt on the street…for the cows to eat. This is India. Love it or hate it. (#tii) As an Australian social worker volunteering with an NGO in Southern India I witness the large divide between the rich and poor of this incredibly colourful nation. I work with many children whose whole families have had to migrate from various parts of India due to the rapid effects of drought on their land and the significant urbanisation of major cities in the last 10 years. It turns out India has seen a boom in it’s industrial and technological trades a little later than it’s western neighbours and they are loving it. But India’s urban boom is threatened with westerners telling them they have to stop producing and polluting. The earth doesn’t like it. Sorry India…We made our big capitalist bucks, but you don’t get that chance. Just when things are getting good and you’re developing astronomically, your main source of energy is being taken away. It turns out fossil fuels are the cheapest form of energy for the developing world, especially as they try in earnest to develop the same standard of living as we have. So as one the most formidable countries in the developing world, India not only has the pressures of navigating a massive population but also has to figure out how to go green on the cheap. It’s interesting that the Turnbull government has reluctantly agreed on a 5% reduction in carbon emissions in the next five years. “Phew! Glad we got through that one boys.” They wipe their sweaty brows while developing countries are drowning, burning and trying to survive on scant resources. These countries are just trying to make a crust, while Eurocentric nations are slowly turning a baguette into organic multigrain sourdough (and throwing the crusts to their hobby cows). If the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris is truly the last attempt for international cooperation, leaders cannot just show and tell their contribution and sit back with folded arms. But how can mere human individuals promote serious teamwork? This brings me back to the children I work with here in India. Every day their parent’s lives are tied to corrupt building associations. They are bonded labourers—gypsies moving from construction to construction. These families have no hope of returning to their now desolate homeland and are not provided social security measures that protect their livelihood. Then there is India’s neighbour, low-lying Bangladesh, experiencing saltwater intrusion that poisons whole water supplies for entire villages. In our own backyard we see Australian farmers shooting all their cattle only to turn the gun on themselves under the shadow of unprecedented drought. This is human impact. Global warming is not just about penguins and polar bears. Climate change is a social justice issue. We live in a globalised world. The industrial revolution brought us here; and climate change is the consequence. No longer do we just neighbour cities, we neighbour nations. The leaders of Australia must be held accountable to all their neighbours including the ones just trying to keep their head above water. It simply won’t do for wealthy nations, such as Australia, to show the world their own country’s carbon reductions and sit back down. This summit can’t work as a set menu; it has to be a potluck dinner, a time for sharing, understanding and safeguarding. For the sake of our beautiful earth and the many diverse cultures of the human race, this time I hope and pray that the leaders of the world provide a resounding voice for the marginalised. This summit and our government must not stop at figures, but uphold the basic democratic and human rights principles that cradle modern society. The United Nations was created so that man-made and worldwide calamities could no longer grasp our world with such authority. Well, it turns out a world war with Mother Nature is knocking on our doorstep. Will we listen and respond? I hope so.   For more information please visit the below links. Black Friday Promotes Over-Consumption and Waste

    By Joseph Ramondeli

Black Friday Promotes Over-Consumption and Waste               Every year Thanksgiving weekend is overshadowed by Black Friday and in recent years Cyber Monday as well. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time when families can get together, even if it’s just for a day or dinner, to talk and reconnect. However every year more American’s are focused on shopping. Stores are now open by 8:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day resulting in people sitting at the dinner table with their families while browsing on their phones for the best deals that they hope to buy in a few hours.  This is just another example of how our modern, technologically advanced society is constantly becoming more materialistic. Aside from Black Friday overshadowing an American holiday and tradition, it is an annual example of how Americans over-consume and by doing so are very wasteful.  A huge fraction of purchased goods during Black Friday and Cyber Monday are things that people don’t need, they are things they think they need. Advertisements and social trends play a big role in the impact of this event (I refuse to call it a holiday) and in our consumption behavior in general.             Companies are tricking and forcing us to buy un-needed goods through the use of planned obsolescence and perceived obsolescence.  Planned obsolescence is disappointing because it refers to how companies purposely make products to only last a few years and by doing so force consumers to by new products from them every couple of years. The most common example of this is electronic devices. Apple creates a new IPhone every year so that once yours break “accidentally” there’s a brand new, more expensive one to purchase as a replacement. Not to mention that such companies stop making old models, forcing you to buy the newest model. On the other hand, perceived obsolescence is promoted by companies but ultimately results from our own social actions. Companies, through advertisements, constantly throw the promotion of new goods in our face. It’s almost impossible to go anywhere or do anything without seeing an advertisement of some sort. These advertisements tend to increase around the holiday season, hence the origin of Black Friday. The main reason such advertisements work is due to the social pressure we put on each other and ourselves. Everyone wants the next new model or brand and once a friend or family member purchases something then we are pressured and attracted to buying it as well. The biggest example of this is the fashion industry, where new trends come and go each season resulting in constant purchasing of new, unnecessary clothing. These companies are clearly getting the better of us based on the success of such events as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.             So why is over-consumption such a bad thing, why should we care if people waste there money on unnecessary goods? It’s simple: overconsumption leads to waste! One of the downfalls to the technological advancements of today’s world is that we create materials that cannot be found in our natural world. This means that when we throw something out in the garbage it will never decompose. Purchasing many of today’s consumer goods is bad enough because most cannot be recycled and will sit in landfills, but over-consumption takes this once step further in that we buy more than we need! We buy new clothes or new phones before our old ones are worn our or broken. By doing so we are creating more waste because we constantly thrown away products that are still functional and contribute the ever-growing amount of waste humanity has created on this planet. In order to help reduce the waste we create of course we should recycle and reuse as much as possible. However, I believe that the creation of waste should be stopped at its source, and that’s our consumer purchasing. Buying less and using goods to there fullest is a sure way to decrease waste. Resisting social pressure and advertisements is key to getting this accomplished. So next year put the phones away and turn the TV off at the dinner table during Thanksgiving, you don’t need them. 1. Learn why you should use natural cleaners in your household. There are safe and environment-friendly ways to keep your home cleaner and healthier.produtos-poluicao-casa-4.jpg

  2. Needless to say, upgrading to new energy efficient windows in your home is a sure shot way to control humidity levels inside. What is crucial here is your choice of company that shall do the job for you. You will come across countless such window companies in Edmonton who offer these services and it may be a tough task to choose one. Though most promise excellent window installation services, not all are to be believed despite good prices because most of these disappear when problems arise in the long run. Therefore it is important that you go with a trusted name that shall help you resolve issues well past installation.

Improper window and door installation not only affects the energy efficiency of the home but also allows water leakage into the home which can be extremely damaging for the house. For a flawless installation ensure the following:

    • The window installation should make the room air and water tight
    • It should insulate the room
    • Installation process should not affect the shape and look of the window
    • Procedures like flashing on the exterior and caulking should be done neatly for maximum effectiveness

Partial or whole Replacement of windows

When you feel the need of window replacement in Edmonton, you have two options that of a retrofit or a complete tear out. A retrofit means a window and door installation in the existing frame where the window or door is being replaced. This is a faster as well as cheaper process and may not always create the perfect seal as desired by you.

A complete tear out on the other hand is pulling down of the entire door or window along with the frame and installation of the entire unit. This process requires professional expertise and if done appropriately will help create the perfect seal enabling better humidity control inside your home.

As a home owner you also need to keep in mind that a certain level of humidity is desirable inside your home even in the cold winter months. You can install a humidifier to keep the levels in check and also if you find condensation on the windows it is sign that humidity is higher than necessary. To control excess humidity, you can adopt a few steps like:

    • Amply ventilate moisture laden areas like bathrooms, wash rooms, kitchen etc. by installing fans and exhausts that vent outside
    • Avoid keeping too many indoor plants
    • Control humidifiers installed at various places in the home

At the end of the day, all you have to ensure is that your window replacement in Edmonton is done by trusted and experienced people in the business who can insulate and create energy efficient homes for you.

  3. Windows demand repairs and replacements owing to wear and tear with passage of time. They are subjected to harsh climatic conditions that affect their performance over the years. Damaged windows allow in drafts of cold or hot air, water leaks, etc. affecting indoor temperatures and ultimately leading to high energy bills. This can be controlled by paying close attention to the condition of windows and taking adequate action to make sure that they are back in shape. If a close inspection of your windows reveal that they need to be replaced, here are a few facts that you should be clear about before going about it.

    InstallaReplacementWindow.thumb.jpg.17a9

Replacement does not mean replacing EVERYTHING!

When replacing a window you ought to know that only the movable parts are replaced and in most cases the frame remains pretty much the same. The glass, the panes, sashes, etc. and other movable parts depending upon the kind of window are replaced for most window repairs and replacements. Also simply restoring the damaged part like a broken or cracked glass, cracked seal, defective pane, etc. can also serve the purpose and render a window as good as new.

It is not advisable to rip of the entire window including the frame as this calls for structural changes that take more time and more expensive and involve a bit of brick and mortar reconstruction as well. However, this option can be exercised in case the frames are extremely damaged and only reconstructing the entire thing will help alleviate the problem.

Replacing windows is NOT a DIY project

It is important for all home owners to remember that window replacement is not a Do-it-yourself project and that it needs professional expertise. Trained technicians from most windows and doors companies have the skill and equipment to deal with such conditions in the most professional manner. Trying to mend windows on your own account is wastage of time and other precious resources.

Research well before choosing a service provider

There are many big names of windows and doors companies around and it can be pretty daunting for home owners to choose one. Conducting exhaustive research on each of them and comparing their services as well as prices will help decide whom to choose. Reputed brands are always good to work with but they are more expensive than the rest. Also ask for referrals from friends and neighbors.

Ascertain cost of replacement and create budget accordingly

Replacement of windows can be quite a pricey affair. However this largely depends on which brand you choose, what kind of window you install, whether it is partial or whole replacement, etc. Compare prices of various companies to arrive at an approximate figure and create a provision accordingly.

  4. We live in an increasingly eco-conscious world, where both home-owners and brands are driven to create a prosperous natural environment. This is even true in major metropolises and cosmopolitan hubs such as the U.S., where nearly 40% of all consumers now make purchasing decisions based on the use of sustainable materials and processes.

There is no doubt that brands and business-owners are leading this drive, however, as the rising prevalence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) continues to compel them. This is empowering consumers to live more sustainable and Eco-friendly lifestyles, while also serving as a template for others to follow.

3 Lessons that Home-owners can Learn from Leading Brands

With this in mind, let’s take a look at three of the major lessons that home-owners can learn from businesses and brands when creating an Eco-friendly living environment: -

Think in terms of ROI when creating a sustainable home

One of the biggest issues facing home-owners is a lack of forward planning, which makes it extremely difficult to create a budget and execute potentially costly Eco modifications around the home. Many may even be deterred by the cost, regardless of the long-term benefits or whether they have the financial resources to complete the project. This is where savvy entrepreneurs would consider the ROI of a specific modification, measuring this against the potential ecological benefits before making an informed decision.

There are energy reduction specialists that can help you to calculate the cost and ROI of Eco-friendly modifications, so before to consult with these in addition to amending your existing mind-set.

Create a culture of Awareness among those involved

This is perhaps the most pertinent lesson that can be learned by business owners, quite simply because long-term environmental gains cannot be made without a culture of awareness. Just as businesses strive to educate their employees on the importance of sustainability and equip them with the tools to work in a socially responsible way, home-owners must empower fellow residents to maintain a cost-effective and energy-efficient home.

This can be achieved by spending time with residents and educating them on how sustainable living can contribute to an improved natural environment. Start by involving fellow residents and family members in the project, creating enthusiasm and a genuine sense of accomplishment in the process.

Pay Attention to small and seemingly insignificant details

Businesses and corporate ventures have a huge advantage when looking to implement Eco-friendly measures, simply because they can delegate specific tasks while maintaining a strategic overview of costs and goals. This makes it far easier to pay careful attention to small and seemingly insignificant details, which in turn can help individuals to manage costs accordingly. While home-owners may lack this level of human resources, they can at least recognise the importance of detail and how it underpins any successful modification project.

In terms of home-modification, this applies to executing small and affordable measures before investing in solar panel. More specifically, you should ensure that your home as interior insulation, which is cheap to install and helps structures to retain heat during the winter. Similarly, you should also look to address any gaps that adorn the walls or doorways, using basic polyfilla or draft excluders. Statistics suggest that this reduces energy loss by 20%, which translates into tremendous efficiency and significant savings.

As a nation the Australians have invented a great deal, from the refrigerator to the surf ski. But who would have thought that Australia would also be the home of a car that runs on tap water?

Well, such was the vision of an amateur engineer who invented a new type of fuel cell that allows almost any car to run on nothing more than water. The revolutionary inventor, known as Joe, envisaged a world where fuel for our cars flowed as freely as water from our taps.

The invention came about in the 1990s when fuel prices were on a never ending incline . Inventor Joe, frustrated at having to pay high prices for petrol started the process of developing a cheaper alternative.

After scouting for some simple parts in a local scrap yard, the Australian experimented on his own car, a V8 Rover, until he eventually invented what was to become known as the ‘Joe Cell’ – an electrolysis cell built from stainless steel pipes that runs on nothing more than H2O.

During a documentary series Joe revealed he created the configuration by ‘throwing it together in a weird order’ and that he was surprised when he ‘hit the key and the damn thing ran’. According to Joe, the water in the cell needs to be charged but is not consumed and can be affected by a number of factors.

Over the past several years, many scientists have invented different versions of water-powered cells. However, unlike the Joe Cell, most of these cells were charged by hydrogen a compound element of water. The Joe Cell, on the other hand, doesn’t involve extracting hydrogen from water, but rather using simple household water.

Many theories claiming to explain how the Joe Cell works have emerged over the years. Among these is the Orgone energy theory, which attributes the Joe Cell to be an Orgone Accumulator – a device that runs on an omnipresent energy source. While other reports claim the Joe Cell generates a gaseous substance that produces energy when ignited.

The lack of scientific verification has meant the Joe Cell has remained highly controversial amongst the scientific community. Some respected scientists have openly condemned the theory as pseudo-science. While some environmentalist groups have herald the Joe Cell as a reputable invention, which could dramatically change the way we consume energy.

The Bryon New Energy Charitable Trust have published claims that they have successfully driven a car across Australia on less than two cups of water. The Trust’s founder, Sol Milin, reported to the Bryon Echo Newspaper that the ‘want to find useful power sources for the planet that enables people to power vehicles for free’.  However, the Bryon New Energy Charitable Trust has yet to develop a useful and free source of energy, and in 2012 their reputation was tarnished when Sol Milin was involved in a court case with Dick Smith, founder of the Australian Skeptics

Due to this uncertainty and scepticism the Joe Cell has become the centre point of many conspiracy theories claiming potential inventors of water powered cells around the world are being intimidated to abandon their research by powerful governments and counter movements.

  6. Does Ireland really get enough sunshine to make Solar Energy worthwhile?

Yes.   Believe it or not, Ireland actually gets the same amount of sunlight as most of central Europe (the best approximation would be southern France).  This is more than enough to make Solar Panels a viable energy option in Ireland.

Do Solar Panels only work when it's sunny?

No.  Even when it is cloudy, the sun's rays provide plenty of harvestable energy.  This is known as 'indirect sunlight', which accounts for 60% of all energy provided by the sun.  Only 40% of solar energy comes from direct sunlight, so a bright sunny day is not necessary for generating a viable source of solar power.

What do Solar Panels actually generate?

Over the course of the year, the energy converted by solar panels can provide roughly 65% of a household's hot water.  During the summer months this can rise above 95%.

What's the difference between Evacuated Tube and Flat Plate Solar Panels?

Evacuated Tube Solar Panels are generally more efficient in terms of energy in cloudy weather conditions (i.e. the weather typically observed in Ireland).  Flat Plate Solar Panels, while somewhat less efficient in terms of energy production during periods of poor weather, are more durable and are far less likely to require maintenance at any point, making them more budget efficient options for households.

My house is quite old.  Can Solar Panels still be attached to it?

Yes.  Some roof tiles may have to be removed to facilitate the Solar Panels, but this is not a major operation and it will not disturb the interiors of a home in any way.  The panels themselves are very light so no structural reinforcement is needed.

Do I need planning permission to install Solar Panels?

No.  Planning permission is not required to install Solar Panels on domestic buildings in the Republic of Ireland so long as the panels are smaller than 12 meters squared.

Where is the best place to put Solar Panels?

The optimum position for Solar panels is facing south and at a 45 degree angle.  This will catch more sunshine (and will create more energy) over the course of the year in Ireland than any other layout.
While Solar Panels can be placed on walls or even on the ground, the roof is generally considered the best spot as it tends to be away from areas of activity, limiting the chances of them getting damaged.

Once installed, what are the running costs of Solar Panels?

As there are virtually no moving parts (with the exception of a small circulation pump), the cost of running Solar Panels at full energy producing capacity is negligible - in the region of 20c per year.

How long does it take for Solar Panels to start 'paying for themselves'?

After approximately 4 or 5 years the savings made from energy created by Solar Panels will have completely  covered the cost of purchase and installation (as well as the aforementioned small ongoing maintenance costs).  After that, the Solar Panels will essentially be creating free energy on an ongoing basis.

What other benefits do you get from installing Solar Panels?

In addition to the energy savings you will make, the addition of Solar Panels will greatly increase a house's resale value.  The house will also benefit from an improved BER (Building Energy Rating).

How long do Solar Panels last?

Due to a lack of moving parts, the Solar Panels themselves last a very long time and almost never require maintenance.  As it is the only moving part in the whole system, the circulation pump is susceptible to minimal natural wear and tear.  It is recommended that the pump is replaced once every 10 to 15 years.  Luckily, a circulation pump is an inexpensive item which is easily replaced, usually costing between €10 and €20 - not much of an outlay over the course of a decade or so; working out at about a euro a year.

Do Solar Panels come with a warranty?

While different companies have different policies, it is usually possible to get a 10 year guarantee which covers repairs and maintenance when it comes to purchasing solar panel products.

Are there any grants/subsidies available for buying Solar Panels?

Yes.  Among the money saving options available to Irish consumers is grant of up to €800 for the purchase/installation of Solar Panels from the SEAI's Better Energy Homes Scheme. More information on this scheme and other means of reducing the cost of Solar Panels can be found here.

  7. Power crisis has evolved as an alarming issue worldwide. Due to consumption of more power, the non-renewable energy sources are depleting from the world. Scientists are opting for renewable sources to suffice the gap created due to over consumption of power. But, for the excess demand of the high-tech gadgets, equipment and appliances everywhere, the power bills are increasing day by day. To cope up with such situations, the power saver devices are becoming popular. The energy saver units are effective in lowering the power bills and protecting the household devices from sudden power fluctuations.

The household power saving devices has lately gained significant accolades from consumers in both domestic and commercial sectors. These units are mainly used in homes for saving the power and recycling the unwanted power back to the main motor for further usage. The residential power saving units is small in size and they can be easily fitted with the main motor or the main electric panel of the home. Some of the companies claim that their energy saving units are effective in lowering the power bills up to 40%. Some of the consumers think that the claims of the manufacturers of power saver devices are false. Almost all the homeowners who have to pay a lot in power bills are installing the energy-saving units at their homes to see a change in the electric bills.

    guarantee.jpg

Many consumers using the power savers explained that the electric bills after installing the devices have the great impact on the power bills. But the reduction of the power bills was not as much as a thought of. There are several serious discussions related to the power saver devices and their effectiveness.

    3.png

Working Principle Of The Power Saver:

The power saver is an electric unit, which is usually plugged to the main power socket. Just by keeping the power saving units connected with the main motor one can reduce the power bills to a great extent. Some of the manufactures claim that the bills will reduce up to 20-40%. Everybody knows that the electric that is flowing into your homes is not stable in the true sense. There are several power fluctuations and surges in the path. The unstable current flow actually affects the overall functionality of the device. Fluctuating electricity often produces unwanted heat that not only affects the atmosphere but affects the appliances as well. Here, the power saver units make the difference. They protect the electric devices from the sudden electric fluctuations. The energy saving units store the energy inside by the use of the capacitors and releases it later without power spikes and surges. These units keep the appliances cool and extend the lifespan of the appliances as well. These devices also remove the carbon footprints from the environment and make the devices more effective.

Thus, basically there are several advantages of using the power saver units in homes, rather than disadvantages. They are available in various capacities according to the requirements of the customers.

  8. I LIKE GREEN ENVIRONMENT

Under the effect of solar radiation, trees will absorb water from the soil, heat-absorbing solar radiation and absorb carbon dioxide from the air to conduct continental shale and release of oxygen gas. very useful for human health and reducing air "greenhouse". So considering not planting trees on unused land, the air temperature in the lower daytime trees from 1-30C, oxygen content in the atmosphere is greater than 20% and less CO2. During continent of green chlorophyll absorbs solar radiation, absorbs the heat should have the effect of reducing the harshness of hot days, reduced reflection of solar radiation on the building, reducing the temperature does not Gas under the trees and can increase air humidity from 2% - 5%, increase air humidity is also beneficial for hot dry day.

    - Trees capable of storing rain water on the plant part, keep the spongy ground with tree roots penetrate the ground to help rainwater penetrates quickly into the ground, reducing flooding situation in the municipality. It is through this feature that in the midlands and mountainous, forest green harmonic effects of rainwater, reducing soil erosion, reduce flood overflow, flooding, flash flood kizi new.
    - When the wind blows through the trees air, dust content in the air will be the leaves retain most, make the air cleaner. Increasingly dense trees, leaves more rugged than the dirt easier grip. When the leaves were dusty, rain will wash the leaves and the leaves will keep dust adsorption cycle. The total amount of dust is hang on one tree with large leaves, thick could reach between 10-30kg. The concentration of dust in the air blowing through the trees can be reduced from 20-60%.

     - Trees absorb potentially harmful contaminants in water and in soil, especially to absorb and hold permanent storage of heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, mercury .. . in the tissues of green packaging, in the trunk, branches and roots of trees capable Due absorb pollutants, so now they have used a number of plant species in line processing system sewage, and is studying to use some plants to treat contaminated soil, absorb heavy metals, soil quality restoration, including the absorption of dioxin in the soil dora.

Conserving energy is a really big thing. The environment has really been suffering, and we need to something about it. Well, there’s a lot you can do, and starting with your home is the first step taken towards a greener, more economic home, and a healthier world. Energy efficient homes are becoming a real trend in the world, and that’s not without a reason. A lot of funds have been put into creating ideas for more energy efficient funds, and today, we can give you some tips on how to make your home more energy efficient.

It’s actually quite possible to make your home more energy efficient while keeping the same comfort level, or even increasing the comfort level in the home. Energy efficient building practices can do wonders in that field. When you are building a new home, or you are renovating your current home, you can save a lot of money by going green.

And even if you are not trying to renovate your home or build a new home, using green power can reduce the energy consumption from fossil fuels even more. The carbon footprint can always be lowered, and it’s the most green thing you can do. Going green is imperative in today’s world, since the world we have is taking a turn for the worse.

So, why not save energy, save money, and contribute your little part in saving the world today? Make your home more energy efficient to do just that.

But how do you do that? Where do you actually start?

Try going small. Take the small steps towards achieving the big goal. For example, if the energy bill is really high, try cutting down on it. You can do a lot to reduce that number and actually help save the environment, and save money too

You should calculate the energy usage per every room in your home, and actually figure out what the cause of that much energy spending is. Maybe you are keeping the lights on too long. Maybe your windows aren’t really sealed well and are costing you a lot of energy. A lot of energy can be lost through windows, and it doesn’t really depends on curtains or blinds, they need to be sealed properly to prevent the endless wasting of energy in your home.

Your light bulbs can also be a big waster of energy in your home. Lights bulbs that are outdated or that don’t fit the right power you need will spend a lot more energy than is needed, and will cost you a lot of money and energy, which in turn is not really a good thing for the environment.

Lastly, you can always consult an expert. If you really don’t have a solid idea on what should you do to make your home more energy efficient, there are people who are in charge of that and can help you with that.

Hemp, also known as marijuana, is a tall, coarse plant native to Asia, but grown nearly anywhere in the world. Besides its drug use, hemp is recognized as a valuable fiber, one that can be used to make rope, fabric and other materials. Hemp oil is also an important byproduct, one that is used as dietary supplement as well as for the relief of eczema, a skin disease.

Hemp oil is sometimes called hempseed oil. No matter the name used, this oil is derived by pressing hemp seeds. This oil should not be confused with hash oil, derived from the cannabis flower and acclaimed by many for its supposed medicinal qualities.

In its natural state, cold pressed, unrefined hemp oil ranges from clear light green to dark in color and has a nutty flavor. For a grassier taste, users can choose a darker color.

In its refined state, hemp oil is clear, colorless and offers only minimum flavoring. This also means that many of its naturally occurring vitamins and antioxidants have been removed. Thus, people seeking to enjoy the full medicinal benefit of hemp oil routinely look for unrefined oils. These oils are incorporated within body car products, including moisturizers, lotions, shampoos and more.

Hemp oil also has an industrial purpose. The oil is used as a wood finish, in particular as a drying oil although it usually is blended with other oils. Hempseed oil is often compared with linseed oil in its usage. This oil has also found use as a biodiesel, according to researchers at the University of Connecticut.

The cannabis saliva plant is used to produce hemp oil. However, it only contains small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive cannabis plant element. In the preparation process, the hemp seeds are cleansed before being pressed into an oil. Thus, hemp oil comes in below the government threshold for permissible tetrahydrocannabinol levels.

Hemp oil is also served as a tincture, whereby it can be added to other ingredients or taken directly. Tinctures include a dropper to ensure that the right amount of hemp oil is extracted.

When using any tincture, the bottle should be thoroughly shaken to ensure a full blending. Then and only then should the dropper be used to pull in the right amount to tincture. That tincture could then be added to a food source or applied directly under the tongue. Holding it in your mouth for upwards of 90 seconds before swallowing will ensure that you receive its full benefit. No, you won’t get “high” from a hemp seed tincture, but it can help you relax and sleep better.

Hemp seed oil is now also popular with those who vape. Vaping is a process that allows people to enjoy different flavorings via an electronic cigarette or similar vaping device, without the side effects of smoking. Like the tincture, only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol is present, well within legal limits. At the same time, users frequently remark that the oil mixed with other flavors provide a winning combination for vaping. This product, like the tincture, is legal in all 50 states.

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has not ruled on the health benefits of hemp oil. That hasn’t stopped proponents from sharing their own findings, always with the proviso that such benefits may not have been independently confirmed explains Tasty Hemp Oil.

Users are often the best people to ask about hemp oil and what it does for them. Some claim that hemp oil lowers their cholesterol levels, maintains their sugar levels (ideal for people with diabetes), and boosts their immune systems. Besides combatting eczema, hemp oil may help people who have another skin condition, namely psoriasis.

At the same time, there are warnings that hemp oil can increase prostate cancer risk, may have an anti-clotting effect on blood, and cause diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Discuss your usage with your medical practitioner.

  11. Engineered or activated water is increasingly taking place in the cleaning industry. It has three major types, which are used for cleaning -- ozone, hypochlorous acid and water electrolysis. Despite the fact that none of these have been recognized as a disinfectant, they are good sanitizers, perfect for cleaning glass and other surfaces. The main thing here is that these activated water solutions help minimize the use of harmful chemicals, thus protecting yours and your children’s health. Many cleaning businesses have adopted the usage of natural, bio detergents, but this technology is on a next level.

The fact that cleaning industries can take advantage of the engineered water technology is not a recent finding. The large machines, needed to put into operation this innovative technology, have been around for many years, but customers weren’t happy with their size and price.

Recently, technologies have evolved and now even the small, hand-held devices can activate water for cleaning purposes. The rising public awareness of sustainability and global warming issues determines this technology as a great step towards providing eco cleaning services at a very decent price.

Еngineered water is obtained through electrolysis, which causes nearly undetectable pH and other changes in its chemical composition. Еlectrolysis is a process which uses electricity to break down water molecules into positively and negatively charged water ions. When you apply water in electrolyzed form to a certain area, the charged ions attach to dirt particles and lift them off the surface. More information about the process you may find in this interesting article.

Activated water products and devices are mostly used in educational establishments, retail and healthcare facilities, commercial buildings and owner-occupied properties. Many building service contractors also embraced the idea. What drives the increase in activated water usage is that this technology provides a great value for little money. The usual cleaning chemicals require high costs for production, transportation and storage. In our case, these costs do not exist for the reason that engineered water can be produced on site.

  12.

“It’s not who we are underneath, but what we do that defines us”, I heard it said somewhere a while ago. After a couple of hours of thinking about this quote, I have realized a few things. I am not as good a person as I could be. No, I haven’t been a bad girl; I just haven’t been doing all that I could be. And I have set a goal for myself to change that aspect of my personality. The road has been difficult, to be honest, but, somehow I have managed to move from  ground zero. This is my experience, feel free to learn from it, if you desire the same thing.

    Others and excuses

There was always someone else to be blamed. During my school years, I held my teachers responsible for my bad marks, later my boyfriend for leaving me, my boss recently for underpaying me, always discomfort. Someone else was doing injustice to me, I thought, and it weighed me heavily. But then, one morning, I realized. It wasn’t them, it was me. Nobody else should be held responsible for my lack of ambition, emotions, motivation, all of those moving powers which I haven’t got much. The first thing I did was, I stopped complaining. Second, I searched for an approach which will fulfill my sense of doing something important. And what did I do? I started going to the park each Saturday and picking up plastic bottles and paper tissues and throwing those in the container. At first, people around were looking at me as if i was a madwoman, but I didn’t care. I knew that I can’t clean the whole planet, but I could clean my favorite park. For a few weekends, it was the same. Me, cleaning, others looking. But, then, a change was made. A young girl joined me. Two older people the weekend after, and so on. Today, our park is one of cleanest in town, just because I hoped others will join, and I have had faith in my neighbors. Be that triggering mechanism!

    Myself and others

By knowing that my stress won’t change anything, I started to take less care about negative connotations. I was improving myself on a daily basis, just by noticing bad behavior and seeing myself within it. Today I suffer far less from anger, rage, stress, and grief after bursts of such feelings. Yet again, I have noticed that it is right time for doing something on the spot. I have never before considered the impact I as an individual am making on the planet. I have never thought about the future, what I will be leaving future generations and my future grandchildren.

Having learned all this, I am here to tell you there is quite a lot you as an individual can do for our Earth. Start with baby steps, at your home. Instead using all those toxic products for a ‘’cleaner’’ home, try looking for something in your kitchen cabinets that is non-toxic and safe to use around your children. What we probably use most are pest control supplies. They can be organic and can be safely used around kids, foods and other sensitive places.

You can reduce carbon dioxide level, by avoiding airplane traveling, and also reconsider which car to buy. Try to save up for solar panels, or solar chargers at least. Believe me, it will be noticeable. Science is advancing greatly today, making breakthroughs, and many modern cars are running on engines which are more eco-friendly, with lower emission of hazardous gases. And when it seems that you can’t do anything alone, just remember that I have started like that as well. Remember also, that no matter how small and insignificant your action may be, it is still a step forward, to better and healthier Earth.

With everything said taken into consideration, I started thinking. Who will benefit most? My generation nowadays or some future one? And I realized it is less important. The most important thing is that something was done based only upon free will and consolidation. And this is something that gives me back hope for a brighter future. In the end, do something. Anything.

  14. Hazardous waste can come in various forms, and it’s not always easy to manage them, much less regulate their disposal. However, the need for proper hazardous waste management has become more and more apparent over the past couple of years, as the imminent threat of global warming has made its presence felt more clearly. But what exactly are we dealing with when it comes to hazardous waste?

    What is hazardous waste?
Waste that poses a threat to the environment and to human health is considered as hazardous, and they commonly exhibit either one or all of these traits: toxicity, ignitability, corrosivity, and reactivity. They can also be infectious, such as those coming from healthcare facilities, or radioactive. Hazardous waste can come in solid, liquid, sludge, and even gaseous states.

What should be done with them?
In an ideal world, all waste products could be recycled and utilized in some other industry. However, the reality is that the world is hardly an ideal setting, and recycling normally isn’t the end point of hazardous waste. Depending on how hazardous waste was created (either by physical, chemical, thermal, or even biological means), treatment and disposal may also vary. For example, certain organic wastes like those from the petroleum industry can be applied with biological treatment, such as landfarming, in which hazardous waste is mixed carefully with surface soil on a designated and suitable area of land. Microbes can be added to metabolize the waste, thus causing it to stabilize. On the other hand, physical treatment involves solidifying, concentrating, or reducing the volume of hazardous waste.

Who is responsible for hazardous waste management?
Hazardous waste management should be the responsibility of everyone. A combined effort is needed from everyone involved in producing, handling, and disposing of the hazardous waste. Each institution that deals with such waste – like healthcare facilities and industrial companies – should follow the standard regulations on handling hazardous waste, and have a set protocol in place. Employees and workers who find themselves at risk for exposure to such waste, or handle them directly, should be trained on how to properly deal with them. The 40-hour HAZWOPER training should be required for such employees.

Whether you work in a facility that creates these hazardous waste, or are part of the cleanup crew to ensure their containment, it is important to understand the impact that such waste has on our lives.  Hazardous waste is inevitable in today’s society, but with proper management, we can ensure that its impact on environmental and human health is contained.

    Tips for Designing a Garden

Make sure your pathways are wide enough for comfortable passage. Nobody enjoys squeezing through narrow spaces, indoors or out. Main thoroughfares should be wide enough for at least two people to walk side by side, no less than 5 feet. For secondary paths where people walk single file, the width should be at least 3 feet. Keep in mind that the taller the plantings or structures that flank your walkway, the wider the path needs to be. Tall boundaries make any space feel more restricted.

Outdoor steps and stairways should ascend gently; otherwise, they are liable to seem daunting. Steps with a rise of 6 inches or less are the most comfortable. The run (or depth) of each step plus twice the rise (or height) should equal 26 inches. So steps with a 6-inch rise would require a run of 14 inches. If your garden stairways include more than 10 steps, consider landings after every fourth or fifth step to ease progress. Landings should be at least as deep as the stairs are wide. A generous landing is an absolute necessity wherever a stairway changes direction.

  16. In the last couple of decades, people became more conscious of the different ways we affect the environment. Our interested in ecology opened up topics like what damages we've done up until now, can we reverse them and can we prevent them from happening in the future. With global warming, polluted waters and deforestation more people want to take part in protecting our planet, bringing the conversation to our homes. Now we do our research and make conscious purchases.

    toxic_cleaning_Products.jpg

Let's talk about cleaning for example. Some of the products we used to think are harmless, are now proven to be dangerous. They go down the sewer or into the ground on their way to disturb the natural eco-system.

Some companies gained a bad reputation for using not-so-eco-friendly chemicals in their cleaning solutions. Behind the beautiful packages and expensive commercials stands something very ugly. The truth. "Kill all the germs!", "More powerful than ever!". What about when this solution goes into the sea? Nothing is lost, the poison just changes locations. Be sure, those chemicals are as bad for the fish, plants and you, as they are for the germs. Simply following the cycle of water, we can see how easily the dangerous chemicals find their way back into our homes.

No wonder people have second thoughts about over-the-counter cleaning products. More people opt-in for professional cleaning services because they offer safe cleaning solutions. But beware! A lot of companies saw this demand as a possibility to break through the market, so they started labelling their products as "eco" and "organic". Some of them really are but most are just as bad as the previous ones. Their lie is hidden on the back of the labels.

    pregnancy-housecleaning-02-pg-full.jpg

People often get discouraged, as they feel like an insignificant speck in the cosmos. But we should all remember that big changes happen with one step (person and household) at a time. We shouldn't wait for others to change. We should take care of ourselves first and set a good example for everybody else.

The number of bad things we should watch out for seems to be growing. From where do you begin?

The first step is conscious purchases. Be aware that mass production is in fact "mass" because consumers buy the stuff. Think about it this way – with every choice you make, for every product you buy, you claim what world you want to live in. If you buy products with heavy, harmful chemicals or made by industries that exploit their workers, it's like giving them thumbs up for it. You invest in it, you give it green light. Having this in mind, you can now start applying it in your everyday life – from grocery shopping to what kind of paint you use for your house.

The second step is to swap disposable items with reusable ones. Why do you have to spend who-knows-how-much dollars in your lifetime on something that you use only once? Like wet wipes for example. They don't disappear into thin air or dissolve in water as lots of people seem to think. "But it's only one wipe," said a million people while flushing it down the toilet. They build up, causing problems for plumbers, as well as for nature. Simply washing with water and soap should do the trick. And they should be replaced with reusable cloths in our households. We can at least try to cut down the usage.

Getting back to the chemicals in the domestic cleaning products. Some of them (actually a great deal of them) are labelled as dangerous to the environment picturing a real wasteland – with a dead fish and a dead tree. This is pretty straightforward. But other companies slip under the radar. Thanks to laws and policies, the businesses are not obligated to list all of the ingredients of the product if there is very little of the toxins in it. Okay, so they're harmless then? Well, no. Combining cleaning solutions can be dangerous and the toxic chemicals build up.

Even those that are labelled as “toxic-free” and “green” can be misleading. Watch out for phonies, who use “eco” or words like this only to decorate their label. They should be certified, not just state it freely. People can start feeling discouraged as they seemingly cannot be sure about the trustworthiness of anything.

But do we really need to use chemical-based products that much?

There are ways to clean without any cleaning solutions. Like using a squeegee and purified water – for windows. Steam treatment technique – for carpets. Pressure cleaning – for outside walls. The later is effective even if the surface has graffiti on it. Those are maybe the best ways to do domestic (and corporate for that matter) cleaning. The equipment for these methods is professional and quite expensive so it's usually used by cleaning experts. If you are looking for service here's a list of what you should be looking for:

    • Environmental Policy
    • Energy Saving processes
    • Responsible products
    • Low energy usage equipment
    • Recycling policy

Even if we don't like it, we do have an effect on the world. Why don't we turn that into something positive and actually be the change in our choices? We try our hardest not only to repair the damages done by previous generations but to prevent any of them repeating in the future. And we can do it. Minimising the negative effect on nature has become more important than ever and every household counts. Are you in?

  17. Emotional support animals are quite similar to the service animals, but the sole difference between these two types of animals is that service animal is trained and can help you with the physical assistance, while an emotional support animal can help one with mental problems or emotional disabilities.

    getty_rf_photo_of_dog_licking_man.jpg (493×335)

Unfortunately people are not aware of these emotional support animals, they are not aware of all the benefits these emotional support animals do have. Emotional support dog are the most popular choice of support animal. Emotional support animal can be beneficial for people who are suffering from ASD. People with ASD may feel negative emotions; they may not be able to handle their daily jobs. The best solution for such people is to adopt an emotional support animal.

Below are some basic benefits that you can get from your support animal:

    1.     Someone who will not judge you:

People who are suffering from ASD may feel like been judged by people all the time, which can be quite upsetting. Therefore one suffering from such problem should adopt support animals as they will love you no matter what you are. This unconditional love will help people build confidence and self-esteem and will also make you love yourself.

    2.     Make you express yourself:

It is very essential that you express what you are and what you feel, unfortunately most people are not able to do so. And this not expressing themselves may lead to problem like anger, frustration etc. therefore you must express yourself. Having a support animal will help you talk to them and express what you feel, some people may thinking writing a diary is easier way out but having a living thing understand and listen to what you have to say is much better option than writing or anything.

    3.     Have someone to be around with:

It is expected from an HR to come out with strategic and routine reports. These reports play a significant role in making more effective use of available human resources in small businesses and in large companies alike. HR reports are potent tools of communication that affects the decision-making at the highest levels of a corporate institution.

•You have to be absolutely certain about the information that is to be conveyed, the purpose behind the communication as well as who you are communicating with as this will dictate the format, depth, content and details of the report.

    • Next you have collect all the information. Some organizations opt for database systems about their employees and statistics can be gathered through in-built or personalized queries. In absence of such databases you may have to rummage through traditional documents or a simple database or excel spreadsheet. Routine HR reports include statistics about HR activities in a specific time frame like new hires, salary info, resignations and promotions. There may also be a need for detailed reports about the local market of the workforce, budgets for salaries and requirements related to skills depending on the nature and utility of the report.

    • Try to find a pattern in the garbled up data of statistics thrown up at you. Absence on particular days, higher turnover of staff may all have special meaning. Try to analyze the meaning behind any pattern. Take for example high rates of absence or resignations in a particular department could indicate management problem which require further analysis or possible action that may be taken. Personal problems are also a possibility in case of some patterns.

    • Make a draft of the report in the style favored by your company or make use of templates of typical hr reports and customize. As an alternative especially if you are a HR student writing an assignment you can hire a specific person or ask for online hr homework help.  If the report requires you to be more formal, then start off with a summary and remember to include a cover page in your report.

    • Prepare explanations about targets, were they achieved or if not met how the shortfalls are expected to be accounted for. Set targets for the commencing period such as retention as well as recruitment and how you plan to reduce absences. Make the HR activities in accordance with the goals of the organization.

    • Single out external factors that may have effect on your business and as a matter of consequence HR operations in the near future. A political, environmental, social and technical analysis may point out possible issues and ways to address those.

    • Maintain clarity of language and avoid HR technicalities especially if colleagues from other departments or stakeholders are among the intended audience.

    • Try to stick to a system for numbered paragraphs and sub paragraphs. This will enhance readability while maintain clarity. The title should be inclusive of the date, purpose as well as the audience of the report.

    • Try to keep the report brief and focus on the primary issues by use of bullet points, graphs and charts as and when necessary. Readers will be keen on simply reading the facts.

These steps will help you in writing an effective HR report that does its job well.

housewife-882533_1280.thumb.jpg.7fe37a55As everyone is talking about the climate changes, global warming and sustainability, it seems like all “passionate” supporters of the green idea are just talking, but they lack action. But I’m happy that you want to take action and change things for good. If you want to live in a greener, cleaner planet, remember that any change begins within ourselves.

Limit your environmental impact, live a healthier life and save money by following these simple steps.

    1. Forget about bottled water. Instead, buy water filters to clean tap water. When on the go, opt for a reusable bottle, preferably aluminium one.

    2. Borrow. Go to the library and borrow the books you want to read, instead of buying them from the bookstore.

    3. Make your own natural cleaners:

    • Usually all the ingredients you need are vinegar, baking soda, lemon and soap.

    • When choosing a cleaning company, hire the one that uses bio detergents in the cleaning process. This company, for instance, works with natural, eco-friendly detergents.

    4. Get out of the car. Reduce the harmful exhaust emissions by walking or cycling to work. In addition to the saved money, you will also improve your health and reduce the risk of obesity.

    5. Save energy:

    • Turn your thermostat down a few degrees in the winter and increase the temperature a few degrees in the summer. This way you will save money on heating and cooling.

    • Replace the old incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones.

    • Unplug appliances when not being used, or buy "smart" power strips. They feel when appliances are off and eliminate "phantom" energy use.

    • Instead of machine drying, hang the laundry on a clothesline or on a drying rack.

    • Improve the insulation, install solar panels, upgrade the windows.

    6. Save water:

    • Invest in a low-flow showerhead.

    • Take shorter showers, bathe with warm, not hot water.

    • In the garden, grow native plants which require few and far between waterings.

    7. Use reusable shopping bags. Put one in your handbag, at home, on your desk, in the car, or any place where it would be useful.

    8. Buy smart:

    • Look in thrift stores, garage sales and consignment shops for clothing and furnishings.

    • Buy in bulk. Save on packaging and money.

    • Invest in high-quality products. Paying more now means less frequently replacing of household items, clothes, appliances, etc.

  19. Green Computing- A Necessity

Uncurbed maneuvering with the natural resources in the recent century has brought us to a point where we must walk safe or we will perish. Environmental degradation has reached almost the unbearable level in many ways which is why the only sustainable way forward is adopting ‘eco-friendly’ techniques.

Green Computing is a step to safeguard against the degrading environmental conditions on the planet. From manufacturing to usage to disposal, computers have a considerable amount of contribution to the environment illness. Green Computing is meant to minimize this effect on the environment and if possible do something to improve the environmental conditions.

Today, most of the businesses are pivoting around the computer-based operations and hence, there is a lot that Green Computing has on offer. From SMBs to leading global MNCs, all have their specific needs of computers and related resources. Their contribution to environment degradation may vary but cannot be neglected. So, it is crucial for all levels of businesses to adopt Green Computing for a better future.

Why Your Business Should Adopt Green Computing?

The hope of a good future is hardly a substantial reason to attract the money-focused business minds. Still, we have seen many businesses coming up openly in the support of Green computing. Here are the reasons for which businesses can benefit from green computing.

    1.       Save Money on Bills: As a business, if you believe in ‘Saving money is earning money’, then adopting Green Computing is definitely meant for you. Green Computing involves the usage of devices that consume low energy that eventually saves your expenses as bills on electricity, etc.

    2.       More Space for Work: Green Computing aims at using technologies that constrain the need of hardware, such as- server, fax machines, etc. and replace them with software-based technologies, like- virtual servers, internet fax, Hosted PBX, etc. This serves the businesses in diminishing the requirements of hardware and dedicated space. The space saved can be used many other productive and eco-friendly efforts.

    3.       Brag about Green Computing: Many surveys and studies have proven that customers prefer services from the brands that highlight their work for social and environmental causes because going with Green Computing creates a positive influence among the customers. Some studies have also revealed that such businesses even gain priority from other businesses for partnership and other dealings. If you are contributing to the environment, make sure that claim for your efforts.

    4.       Recognitions and Marketing: Many government agencies, NGOs, environmental groups, media houses, etc. offer special certifications and prizes to businesses for their work for the environmental benefits. It comes as a free advertising for the business as news related to such recognitions keeps you in the limelight. Also, such certifications and recognition logos can even be used on the website and pamphlets that help in creating a reputed-brand feeling in the market.

    How to Adopt Green Computing?

In case you are not impressed with the goodness of Green Computing mentioned above you should still take a look at the ways in which you can adopt it and help the planet. Possibly, the ease of adopting it will impress you.

    1.       Adopt Energy Efficient Devices: To simplify it further, Energy-Star rating for most of the electronic devices has been declared mandatory by most governments across the world. Check out the Energy-Star ratings for the devices that you purchase for your business. Usual recommendation by experts is to opt for the devices with 4-star or better ratings.

    2.       Switch to Cloud-based Solutions: With the introduction of the cloud, Green Computing has got the real fuel. Basically, it replaces huge server rooms with a simple software installation. Furthermore, with application hosting, it can even replace software installation. Cloud-based solutions eradicate the need of dedicated cables and wires, stores more data than physical storage drives can imagine. One can keep on counting on the benefits of cloud hosting for environment forever and the list might keep growing.

    3.       Avoid Printing or Make Most of Each Printed Page: Use emails, Internet Fax, etc. instead of usual printed pages. Minimizing page consumption is a multi-way benefit as it saves on manufacturing, disposal, and maintenance cost to a great extent. However, running a business with zero consumption of pages is not possible for all. In such cases, using smaller fonts, narrow margins, both-side printing, etc. can be a very valuable contribution.

    4.       Encourage Employees to Follow Eco-Friendly Practices: Most operating systems offer an efficient mode, which can be used for saving expenses on the energy. Employees must be encouraged to use the devices in such modes. Switching off the computer when not in use, sharing of devices, etc. are some of the practices that can be introduced into office culture without much hassle.

    5.       Recycle and Smart Disposal: Electronic waste (e-waste) is a big issue that the world is facing right now. Try to recycle the electronic devices in a smarter manner and at the time of disposal make sure that you follow the government and manufacturer guidelines.

    Final Note

Business means profit and many businesses have belief in a myth that if they adopt Green Computing, they will have to suffer on the financial terms, which keeps them from helping the environment. However, the results so far have been completely opposite. For almost all levels of businesses, the green computing has brought significant cost cutting in many ways. There are certain procedures that appear to be inviting expenses, such as- buying energy efficient devices.  But they have long-term benefits.

Also, various governments are thinking about making it mandatory for businesses to adopt a specific level of Green Computing and the decision is certain to arrive. The only question is when – sooner or later. Today it is ‘making a choice’ and tomorrow it will be ‘following an order’.

  20. Black Friday Promotes Over-Consumption and Waste

Every year Thanksgiving weekend is overshadowed by Black Friday and in recent years Cyber Monday as well.

  21. This year, we have been thinking a lot about how to be more eco-friendly. We know that we can turn off lights when we leave the room, walk rather than taking the car where possible, and avoid products which use a lot of plastic packaging. But what can we do at Christmas time to be better for the environment? Here are some tips.

    0MEg3Zg.jpg

    Shop local

Every product which is imported, from your presents to your tree to your food on the table, has a carbon footprint. If something has travelled overseas then it needs to either fly or come by truck over a ferry, neither of which are great options. In order to reduce the carbon footprint of your Christmas, you can try to shop locally. This will also help to grow your community and support local businesses, which is a great bonus. While you might not have farms supplying everything in your locale, you can at least choose things which have been produced within your country.

    Choose your tree

    SPGLHBd.jpg

Make sure that you are getting your tree from an eco-friendly source if you are buying a real one. You should be able to check how the tree is grown and whether or not it is done in a sustainable way. If you are going the plastic route, buy a tree for life. Don’t throw it away after one year – plan to keep it for 20 or 30. This will offset the carbon cost of making the tree because of the amount of use that you get out of it. When you do get rid of your tree, try to recycle it or donate it to charity rather than just throwing it in the bin.

    Send green

If you have gifts that must be shipped out, then make sure that you do it the green way with PACK & SEND. They have practices in place which mean that your carbon footprint will be reduced by using their services as opposed to a postal service. Think about the way that you package your gifts, too. Do you really need all those layers of cardboard and bubble wrap, or would a smaller parcel work just as well to protect the gifts?

    Change your bulbs

    plKvduR.jpg

Make sure that your fairy lights aren’t draining your electric bill and putting a strain on the environment! Pick out a set with more eco-friendly bulbs and both will be improved. LED fairy lights are a good choice as they take less electricity to run and don’t cause any heat, which makes them less of a fire hazard. It’s also fun to sit with only the lights of the tree in the evening and turn off your main lights, which will save a lot of energy! Try to watch your energy usage in general – could you turn off the television and play board games together, for example?

    Remove food waste

When doing your shopping before Christmas, try to be more realistic about what you actually need to buy. So much food is wasted every year because we make such big feasts which are not actually eaten. When you have vegetable leftovers that can’t be used, try to turn them into compost or feed them to a pet. Eat up leftovers where possible. If you can’t get rid of all of your food, you may be able to find a nearby shelter which takes spare food donations.

It’s easier than you think to have a green Christmas. Just think about reducing waste and shopping local, and the rest will fall into place!
