Ask a (dirty) web host to go green!

You got some time over? Want to try to make some difference or at least causing some thinking in the web hosting industry? Great!

As we all, hopefully, knows global warming is real and science shows that we humans have made enormous impacts to our planet that affects our welfare and survival. Global warming is the biggest threat facing humanity today. We can stop the worst effects, but only if everyone act now.

There are some good web host owners who have already decided to do their part. But unfortunately there are hundreds, yes, even thousands of other web hosts and resellers out there that isn’t doing their part in the fight against global warming. It doesn’t matter if it’s offsetting, powering your servers or offices with renewable energy, buying green RECs, asking your local government to act on global warming or just doing some recycling in the office. Every little step helps. But some host companies just don’t even try.

So now we need to make these hosts think. There is an old slogan that says that the customer always has right. Sure it may not always apply but it’s a good point to follow if you run a company that needs customers to survive as a company.

Most web hosts let’s potential customers contact them via either a Live Chat, email or even via telephone. Find a web host, contact them and ask them what they do as a company to fight global warming. You can even pretend you are interesting in their service and that you just want to know how dedicated they are to global warming before you decide to buy hosting from them; it will just make them want to act much faster.

Here is a text you can use when you contact the web host:

Hi. I am looking around for a new web host. Your host looks perfect but before I decide anything I would like to know what you, as a company does to help stop global warming?

You can also ask your current host what they do to help stop global warming. Or you can show them that you are serious and move to a green web host ASAP without waiting for their response (just don’t forget to let them know why you move to a new web host).

Tell us about the responses you get from various web hosts by sending us an email (info[at]green-blog.org) or by posting in our forum.
