Watch green HD documentaries with Miro

By Simon | No Responses

Miro

Here is just a short shout out for people who, just like me, love to watch TV/Videos on your computer (who needs a TV anyways?).

Miro is a free open-source program that lets you download and watch videos, podcasts and even torrent files. Miro works on Macs, PCs and even on Linux.

Alright then, when you have downloaded Miro and installed it search for a High-Def channel called “KQED QUEST Science Video Podcast“. It’s a science video podcast (duh!?) that has some really nice green documentaries, in High-Definition, like “The Great Switch-Out”, “Napa Wineries Face Global Warming”, “From Waste To Watts: Biofuel Bonanza” and many others.

Zonbu – the first zero-emissions personal computer

By Simon | 9 Responses

Zonbu

Zonbu is a small, small like the mac mini, personal computer. But what’s special about the Zonbu is not that it’s so small, it’s that it’s the first zero-emission personal computer.

Zonbu runs on a linux platform with a 1.2 gigahertz processor, 512 meg of RAM and a 4 gigabyte flash card. That’s plenty to satisfy the majority of ordinary computer users.

This small environmental friendly computer consumes six times less power than a standard (energy wasting) light bulb. Did I mention the price tag for this beauty? Zonbu only costs $250 dollars.

But nothing is perfect in the real world. In order to get more storage space you need to subscribe to the Zonbox service. Zonbox will provide you with software and firmware updates and up to 100 gigs of storage space. It will even offset your Zonbu usage. Zonbox costs $12.95. Keep in mind that if you are currently using an older computer you can actually save those money off your utility bill when you have purchased Zonbu (older computers uses more energy).

The 11th Hour

By Simon | 1 Response

The 11th Hour

Today The 11th Hour hits theaters across the USA. The 11th hour is produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio.

This film is not really about global warming, like Al Gores An Inconvenient Truth. The 11th Hour looks at “humanity’s past, present, and future: how we came to meet this desperate tipping point, how we live and impact our earth’s ecosystems, and what we must do to ensure a worthwhile future”.

“The 11th Hour” is the last moment when change is possible. The film explores how we’ve arrived at this moment — how we live, how we impact the earth’s ecosystems, and what we can do to change our course. Featuring ongoing dialogues of experts from all over the world, including former Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachev, renowned scientist Stephen Hawking, former head of the CIA R. James Woolsey and sustainable design experts William McDonough and Bruce Mau in addition to over 50 leading scientists, thinkers and leaders who discuss the most important issues that face our planet and people.

The new iMac from Apple

By Simon | 3 Responses

Apple iMac

Last week Apple released their brand new iMac to the world. Like always its one heck of a design and the computer looks great.

But how green is this new iMac? After a massive campaign where Greenpeace and thousands of Apple users demanded Apple to become greener and the growing global warming threat this is one hot topic these days.

Steve Jobs have said that “recycling has been kept in mind from the ground up” in the making of the new iMac. Steve has also posted a green manifesto where he talks about how green Apple will become.

But what about the new iMac then!? Well, to be honest it’s not much to hang in the tree.

Is Global Warming Swollowing Florida Whole?

By Michelle | No Responses

Is Florida already feeling the early effects of global warming? Can we safely say that Florida is sinking into the ocean? The rumors I heard as a child, that such a thing could happen, seemed like folklore. If you listen to the many experts on the subject though, that seems to be the case. Beans that I’m a citizen of the Sunshine state, as one would imagine, this issue is of great concern to me.

In this article, we will look at the severe impacts that have yet to hit us. There were conclusions layed out in an October 2001 scientific study published
by NRDC in conjunction with research scientists at Florida universitie. The study found that the far-reaching effects of global warming will transform Florida’s climate, coastline and treasured natural areas. Such impacts will hit in ways that are expected to profoundly affect the state’s economy, agriculture, and ultimately, the health of its people.
